I like the basic idea of the book, which Gemmell hammers home: how mythic heroes can be constructed out of flawed men. There’s a double meaning here too: the story may bear little resemblance to the man; alternatively the man may be driven to become the hero.

 

There are some nice enough tensions, particularly as the idealistic bard/conjurer narrator struggles to reconcile
