Implementation

As the Client As the Designer As the Researcher Communication

For this assignment, each member of "The Unknown" had to come up with a design proposal on a virtual community of their choice. Each individual proposal was then analysed by every group member before selecting one final design proposal to be submitted to Group #15, "5-Girls" (the Designers of our community), for implementation.

The five subject areas we had to choose from were:

  • Soccer VC - Providing soccer fans a Virtual Community where they can obtain information on soccer, and exchange any information and opinions etc

  • Pets VC -  A Virtual Community where pet owners/lovers can learn how to care for their pets and, exchange information with other participants, and find lost pets etc

  • Anime & Manga VC - A Virtual Community where anime & manga fans can obtain information or exchange information and opinions on anime with each other

  • Gaming VC - A Virtual Community where you can play games against other participants online, and share information and tactics with other members

  • Auction Trading VC - A Virtual Community where items can be posted by the public to be bought/sold by means of an auction

The final proposal was chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Subject Area Knowledge - Did the person have a wide knowledge on the topic?

  • Target Market - Did the community have a large potential market?

  • Technology - Was it feasible in terms of technology used?

  • Design - Was the requirements analysis for the design clear?

  • Research Strategies - Were these clear and realistic?

The following are the pros and cons of each individual proposal:

Gusriyanto

Virtual Community - Soccer

Pros:
  • Interesting subject area with high potential to attract people since soccer is known to most people all over the world
  • The design of this community allows members to easily obtain the information and activities range from sharing knowledge and opinions via online communication/interaction, to searching the database for information on soccer
  • User-friendly design, funky and attractive look, with easy to understand functions
  • Many features to engage more people in the community
  • Uses detailed technology to support implementation, and most technology used is free

Cons:

  • This is a virtual community which will attract soccer fans only

Gusriyanto's Soccer Virtual Community was the one chosen for implementation by the Designer team Group #15 "5-Girls".

Reason Selected:

There is a huge market segment for this community. The plans for the prototype are given extensively such as the prototype of design community and web design. This will be very helpful to the design team, as they will have a clear understanding of specifications and requirements and has the least ambiguity of all proposals

Chee Choong Yee

Virtual Community - Pets

Pros:

  • The subjects of pets interest a lot of people as most people own pets nowadays
  • The lack of resources available online on this topic will attract people's attention
  • The design of this community ranges from interaction, communication, sales, knowledge shared, and information on database
  • Attractive design, functions easy to understand, and easy for users to familiarise functions
  • Technology used is very popular in current market and often used in other communities as well and are mostly free or cost very little

Cons:

  • This community will mainly attract pet owners or animal lovers only
  • Target market is small, probably the reason why there are so few communities on this subject available on the internet

Reason Not Selected

Target market for pets very small compared to soccer. There are much more soccer fans as opposed to pet owners and animal lovers.

Andree Hopito

Virtual Community - Anime

Pros:

  • Free to use and lot of stuff for members
  • There are some existing communities which can be used as examples
  • Donations are given from members

Cons:

  • Target market  not very big
  • It requires a server which may be expensive
  • Requires some staff members to keep the community running and up to date

Reason Not Selected

Market segment of anime fans relatively small, also could be expensive to implement

Nga Kin Tong

Virtual Community - Gaming

Pros:

  • Interesting subject area and is one of the most popular types of virtual communities
  • Many features to provide a wider range of service

Cons:

  • Complicated to develop, and maintain
  • Expensive production cost: huge amount of money to create an online game virtual community
  • Requires a lot of time to create

Reason Not Selected

This virtual community requires high technology and skills to develop. Therefore, it will be too hard for the creator to build the virtual community.

Yukie Kukino

Virtual Community - Auction Trading

Pros:

  • A wide target market and large market segment as it is not specifically for certain types of people- open to anyone and everyone who wants to buy or sell items
  • User friendly set up for all ages

Cons:

  • Rather time consuming and costly to develop such a complicated site with so many features - not really viable as a school assignment

Reason Not Selected

Too complicated - could take up to six months to create and very expensive to set up.

Evaluation of Implementation by the Designer Group

Our Soccer Community site implemented by "5-Girls" will be evaluated based on authenticity and quality using the following checklist. The evaluation is based on the following design principles:

Criteria

Evaluation

Rating (Upon 10)

Simplicity

The design of the website looks good but no originality. The site source was extracted from an unknown site, although we do not mind this.

7/10

Clarity

The abbreviation used for each icon was good. However, there is insufficient information in the main page about the website's objectives. There is nothing which indicates the website’s purpose. Users may be misled and confused of the site’s objective.

4/10

User Control

This site  lacks user control. Columns are placed on both sides. The position of icons and links are too close to each other which will make it difficult for the user.  Also, there is no ‘back’ icon provided in all the pages of the site.

5/10

Feedback

There are no pop-up messages to indicate information that is unavailable.

5/10

Consistency

The colour scheme used for soccer is not appropriate. We expected the colour to be more attractive to suit soccer fans and 'eye-soothing'. The arrangement of columns is inconsistent from page to page. This may be due to the unoriginality of the site.

4/10

Functionality

All functionalities of the site were designed based on the proposal. However, none of them are working

1/10

Help and Documentation

There is no information in the website

1/10

Accessibility

Overall, this site provides accessibility to the general public which meets our needs and requirements.

7/10
