The picture represents a number of non-rational things that might be on the person's mind. Those in the right hand box are generally the more instinctive ones. Those on the left are the "nice to haves", often involving contact with other people. The ones in the cloud at the top are various desirable goals.
The sort of assumption that seems to permeate management theory is that we are driven by external motivation (e.g. money, perks, ambition) and that our primary modes of work are using our hands and bodies, rational thinking and planning. But what drives humans to do things is more complicated than that. We as humans are just advanced animals with a limited span here on earth, and what we do depends a lot on our attitude to that situation. Apart from the basics of water, food, and a temperate environment we also have emotional and instinctive needs.
A few other needs that should be mentioned include:
If too many of these are taken away, we may perform badly, and show dysfunctional traits, such as:
Some of these needs and tendencies can be taken advantage of by power-seekers through the use of bullshit and "spin" - so we need to keep our eyes open.
Note: This mini-essay was written before I read Bendelow & Williams 'Emotions in Social Life'. I don't feel I want to completely revise this page just now, so am leaving it more or less as it was.
