Relationship Major Category Introduction - "Volition"

General Meaning

This relationship links people (possibly some animals) with what they would like - or not like.

Category Icon

The icon represents the idea that an individual human, group, sentient animal or robot would like something to happen - and, maybe, wants to do something towards making it happen, stop it happening or allow for the limitations and risks.

The A role (2 top left icons below) represents the state of affairs desired or feared. The B role represents those who want to reach it, or avoid it. The I role is the tool or means of achieving what is wanted; the M role is the process for achieving it.

Relationship Types in this Category

In the first sub type a state of affairs is desired by an active thing, code “Vd”:

• pleases (or displeases) - a state of affairs A, by a human, sentient animal or group of humans or animals B
• is desired by - a state of affairs A, by a human, sentient animal, group, or maybe also an autonomous robot B
• is seen as an ideal by - a state of affairs A, by a human, or group – could be an “ism”
• is imagined by - as above for humans, but due to a conscious envisaging of the possible future
• is dreamed by - similarly
• is thought by - might be beyond success or disaster - maybe just an idea that comes to mind. But this does not include theorizing or rationalizing, which is covered under Reasoning

The next sub type is concerned with intentional management of things, code “Vm”:

• is intended by - is the subject of a definite wish, but not necessarily with any plan
• is planned by 
• is designed by - usually in response to a requirement and a set of limitations
• is required by - is needed by, is wanted by are variants
• is managed by - could be of a process
• is delegated to - it is more likely to be the process M that is delegated to the actor B
• B is responsible for A - is the primary stakeholder in the success or failure
• B is committed to A - by a human or group, of a process

The next sub type is concerned with constraints on what resulting states of affairs may be possible. Code “Vc”

• is limited by a state of affairs, or an independent process, that can impinge on the result
• is constrained by a state of affairs, or an independent process, that can impinge on the result

Finally we have a risk sub-category, code “Vr”:

• is feared by
• is a possibility - no actor is involved, only the author Z expressing the possibility
• is assessed as risk by
• is anticipated by
• is threatened by a proposed action from an independent or competing party

Examples

Desire
Chocolate pleases me. I would like to be eating a Zabaglione. The pack of wolves desires to catch a deer. I imagine that we can come to some compromise over this issue. I dreamt that I was running down the street naked. I thought that we might get a discount on this purchase.

Management
I intend to apply for a dog licence. I plan to visit Europe next summer. The new computer system was designed by a team from EDS. A booking is required to attend the George Shearing concert. The bus service along Magill Road is managed by Torrens Transit. Allan Baird is responsible for our School's student projects. I am committed to the Systems Design course running successfully this semester. The practical session on Wednesdays is delegated to Siaw Sim. Carrying out the overnight chemical sampling is delegated to a robot.

Constraints and Limitations
I anticipate that petrol prices will hit $2 per gallon by the end of this year.

Risk
I fear that the cricket match will be rained off. I'm taking a calculated risk that it won't rain for our walk tomorrow. I anticipate that petrol prices will hit $2 per gallon by the end of this year.
