Thomas Shergold was born on 12 September 1815 in Stapleford, Wiltshire, England as the seventh child of Joseph John Shergold and Ann Shergol. He had eight siblings, namely: Elizabeth, Mary Ann, George, John, Joanna, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Emmanuel.

Thomas Shergold emigrated from London on the ship ‘Woodbridge’ and arrived in Sydney, New South Wales on 15 September 1838. He was listed as 23 years old, single and a labourer.

When he was 23, He married Clara Smith, daughter of Edward Smith and Mary Delicate, on 22 September 1838[1] in St Andrew's Scots Church, Cumberland County, Sydney, New South Wales.

Thomas Shergold and Clara Smith had the following children:

1. Mary Ann Shergold was born on 16 May 1840 in Shoalhaven, , New South Wales. She died in 1844.

2. Emma Shergold was born in 1841 in Numba, New South Wales. She married Charles Langley in 1859 in Kiama, New South Wales. She died on 13 September 1904 in Bellawongarah, New South Wales.

3. Thomas Shergold was born on 20 August 1843 in Lane Cove, New South Wales. He died on 06 September 1925 in Cessnock, New South Wales.

4. Mary Anne Shergold was born on 12 June 1845. She died on 01 January 1925 in Dunoon , New South Wales.

5. Sarah Shergold was born on 13 February 1847 in St Leonards, New South Wales, Australia. She died on 17 April 1868 in Burrawang, New South Wales.

6. William Shergold was born on 18 December 1849 in Sydney New South Wales. He died on 14 October 1913 in Newcastle, New South Wales.

7. Daniel Smith Shergold was born on 23 April 1855 in Jamberoo, Kiama, Shoalhaven, New South Wales. He died on 18 July 1855 in Kiama, Shoalhaven, New South Wales.

8. Robert Henry Shergold was born on 21 November 1856 in Jamberoo, Kiama, Shoalhaven, New South Wales. He died on 14 September 1927 in Queensland.

When he was 47, He married Harriet Taylor on 23 June 1863[2] in St John's Church Newcastle, New South Wales. They had no children.

Thomas died on 15 February 1881 in Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. He was buried in 1881[3] in Campbells Hill Cemetery, Sect D9, Plot 175.
