Samuel Hockey was born on 05 February 1852[1] in Illawarra, New South Wales, Australia as the third child of Samuel Hockey and Mary Ann Ryan. He had thirteen siblings, namely: Eneas, Charles, John, Mary, George Daniel, Henry Perceval, Eliza Jane, Lewis Walter Luke, David, Margaret Ellen, Alfred Enos, Albert James, and Sarah Anne.

 

As a young man, Samuel was a grazier, who dabbled in mining.

 

When he was 23, Samuel married Sarah Louisa Hockey, daughter of Thomas Hockey and Mary, in 1876[2] in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia.

 

Samuel became a fisheries inspector.

 

Samuel Hockey and Sarah Louisa Hockey had the following children:

 

1. Mabel Louisa Hockey was born on 31 July 1876 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. She married Edward Harvey on 15 November 1898 in Windellama, New South Wales, Australia. She died on 05 March 1899 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia.

 

2. Albert Uric Hockey was born on 15 January 1878 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. He died on 12 September 1894 in Braidwood, New South Wales, Australia.

 

3. Addis Bernice Hockey was born on 25 January 1880 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. She died on 25 June 1958 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia.

 

4. Isaac Arthur Hockey was born on 20 October 1881 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. He died on 21 May 1902 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia.

 

5. Walter Daniel Hockey was born in 1883 in Argyle, New South Wales, Australia. He died on 06 March 1966 in Windellama, New South Wales, Australia.

OBITUARY - Mrs. Sarah Hockey died in a private hospital in Goulburn on Friday at the age of 58 from heart failure. Mrs. Hockey, who. was the wife of Mr. Samuel Hockey, of Windellama, is survived by four sons and five daughters.

Obituary - MR. SAMUEL HOCKEY - Mr. Samuel Hockey, an old and widely respected resident of Windellima, died at the Goulburn District Hospital on September 10, in his 73rd year. He had for the greater part of his life resided at Windellima, where he had followed mining and grazing pursuits. His wife died some time ago. He leaves four sons and four daughters, the sons being Messrs. Walter, William, and Roland, of 'The Spa," Windellima, and Cecil of Goulburn. The daughters are Mesdames Stanley Muffett, Gunning; E. Doyle. Cullerin; J. Phillip, Goulburn, and Miss Sarah Hockey, Gunning. The late Mr Hockey was one of a family of fifteen, seven of whom still survive.. The late Mr. David Hockey, who died last June was a brother.

OBITUARY - MR. S. HOCKEY - At the District Hospital on Monday the death occurred of Mr. Samuel Hockey, aged 73 years, an old resident of Windellima. For the major portion of his life Mr,Hockey resided at Windellima, where he was engaged as grazier, doing a little mining as well. Eight children survive, Mrs. Hockey having predceased him some months. The daughters are Mesdames J. Philip (Goulburn), S. Muffett (Gunning), K, Doyle (Cullarln), and Miss Sarah Hockey (Gunning) .The sons are Messrs, Cecil (Goulburn), William, Roland and Walter (Windellima).
