Niels Carl Christian Rudolph Olsen was born in 1852 in Ferslev, Frederiksborg, Denmark as the second child . He had one elder sibling, namely: Ole.

Niels, with his brother Ole, sailed from Hamburg on 10 April 1872 and arrived  in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia on the ‘Humboldt’ on the 01 August 1872.

When he was 20, He married Katharina Hannsen, daughter of Petersen Hannsen and Johanna Rasmussen, on 20 July 1872[1], in Queensland, Australia.

1. Charles Torvald (Thorwald) Olsen was born in 1872 in Queensland, Australia. He died on 28 May 1937 in Queensland, Australia.

2. Catherine Amelia Olsen was born in 1874 in Queensland, Australia. She married Henry Bayfield in 1893 in Queensland, Australia. She died on 25 August 1902 in Queensland, Australia.

3. Mary Olsen was born in 1876 in Queensland, Australia. She married Thomas Walter Boody in 1907 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. She died on 20 November 1948 in Queensland, Australia.

4. Louis Olsen was born in 1878 in Queensland, Australia. He died on 24 March 1944 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

5. Jessie Olsen was born in 1880 in Queensland, Australia. She died in 1970 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

6. Charlotte Olsen was born in 1883 in Queensland, Australia. She died in 1883 in Queensland, Australia.

7. Elizabeth Olsen was born in 1886 in Queensland, Australia. She married William Henry Fielder in 1903. She died in 1980 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

8. Alfred Olsen was born in 1889 in Queensland, Australia. He died in 1961 in Queensland, Australia.

Niels had at least four illegitimate children to at least two other women.

Niels died on 14 April 1950[2] in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, age about  90.
