OBITUARY.-News was received in Warwick on Thursday last of the death of Mr. Edmond Lambert Thornton, who in the earlier days of the town's history was a prominent figure in all matters of public moment. On his arrival in the district many years ago, Mr. Thornton was employed on Rosenthal station. Subsequently, having inherited a large sum of money under the will of a relative in England, he purchased the property known as " Lonsdale, on the Freestono road, now owned by Mr. P. Canavan. Mr. Thornton on several occasions was returned as a member of the Municipal Council, and in the years 1869-70 he occupied the position of Mayor. At a subsequent date he successfully contested the Warwick seat, and represented this electorate for some years in the Legislative Assembly. About eight or nine years ago he removed with his family to Brisbane, and for some time past it was known to his friends here that he was in failing health, the trouble being an incurable internal growth. The deceased was about 60 years of age.
