John Ward was born on 09 September 1764 in Oxfordshire, England as the first child of Matthew Ward and Sarah Pearson. He had seven siblings, namely: William, Matthew, Sarah, Daniel, Robert, Edward, and Esther.

When he was 31, He married Ann Baxter in 1796.

John Ward and Ann Baxter had the following children:

1. George Ward was born on 29 January 1797 in Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire, England.

2. Mary Ward was born in 1800.

3. George Ward was born in 1804 in Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire, England. He married Jane Housden on 14 October 1827. He died on 27 September 1860 in South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

4. Charlotte Ward was born in 1809.

5. Frances Ward was born in 1810.

6. James Ward was born in 1816 in Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire, England. He died in 1816 in Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire, England.

7. William Ward was born in 1821.

8. Sarah Ward was born on 25 September 1826 in Castle Hedingham, Essex, England.
