Mr. J. T. Fielder.- Mr. John Thomas Fielder, one of the oldest residents of Tamborine,
whose death occurred on Saturday, was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Fielder,
and was born in Vulture Street, South Brisbane, on March 10, 1869. At the age of
16 he went to Tamborine and was engaged by Mr. Harry Welch to drive the first Brisbane
- Tamborine coach. On the completion of the South Coast railway as far as Beenleigh
the coach service was from that centre, and later, when the Beaudesert Railway branched
from Bethania Junction as far as Logan Village, the Tamborine run was diverted to
there. The linking of Tamborine with the city by the Canungra railway put an end
to the coaching days, and Mr. Fielder then turned his attention to butchering, being
foreman under eight different changes of ownership. During the last five years he
had been engaged in dairy farming on his property near Tamborine Railway Station.
In 1891 the late Mr. Fielder married Miss Jane Welch, youngest daughter of Mr. Harry
Welch, who was licensee of the first Tamborine Hotel, and held it for 37 years, in
the 1887 flood the water was 4ft. 8in. high in the bar, and the family was forced
to use the R.C. Church as a temporary abode until the water receded. These two buildings
comprised Tamborine township at the time. The deceased is survived by his widow,
two daughters - Mesdames Bishop and J. McGuiness (Brisbane), and two sons, Messrs.
Herbert and Frank Fielder (Brisbane).
