John Robertson was born in 1863 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland as the fourth child of John Robertson and Margaret Maven. He had ten siblings, namely: Alexander, Thomas, Margaret, William Robert, Adam, Robert, Archibald, Peter Francis, Daniel, and Agnes.

When he was 32, John married Amelia Isabella Clarque, daughter of Ralph Waldo Clarque and Annie Doherty, in 1895[1] in Queensland, Australia.

Amelia Isabella Clarque already had the following child:

1. Maud Elizabeth Clarque was born on 01 January 1893 in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. She married Donald Sydney Smith on 18 May 1910 in Queensland, Australia. Maud died on 10 October 1972 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

At some point after 1905 Amelia adopted the following child.

2. Leslie John Robertson was born to Margaret Ellen Tomlinson on 21 May 1905 in Queensland, Australia. He married Clara Maud Ingham on 25 July 1925 in Queensland, Australia. Leslie died in 1979 in Queensland, Australia.

John died on 21 November 1909[2] in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, age 46.

When she was 41, John’s widow Amelia married Heinrich Joseph Kopp in 1912[3] in Queensland, Australia. They had no children.

Amelia died on 3 August 1962[4] in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, aged 92.
