John Hockey was born on 16 November 1853[1] in Albion Park, New South Wales, Australia as the fourth child of Samuel Hockey and Mary Ann Ryan. He had thirteen siblings, namely: Eneas, Charles, Samuel, Mary, George Daniel, Henry Perceval, Eliza Jane, Lewis Walter Luke, David, Margaret Ellen, Alfred Enos, Albert James, and Sarah Anne.

When he was 28, He married Frances E Perkins, daughter of William Joseph Perkins and Sarah Anne Rooke, in 1882[2] in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia.

Frances died in 1913.

John died on 02 June 1926[3] in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia. , age 72.
