John Hockey was born on 12 September 1803 in Somerset, England as the seventh child of William Hockey and Catherine Bool. He had eight siblings, namely: Thomas, Susannah, Susannah, Jesse, Joel, Joseph, Joel, and Abigail.

 

When he was 20, He married Mary Lovell in 1824 in St Catherine's, Montacute, Somerset, England.

 

John Hockey and Mary Lovell had the following children:

 

1. Samuel Hockey was born on 29 April 1824 in Montacute, Somerset, England. He married Mary Ann Ryan on 26 March 1848 in Dapto, New South Wales. He died on 16 December 1905 in Windellama, New South Wales.

 

2. Enos Hockey was born in 1826 in Somerset, England. He died on 10 September 1889 in New South Wales.

 

3. Charles Hockey was born on 29 April 1829 in Somerset, England. He died on 15 April 1841 in Montacute, Somerset, England.

 

In 1830, He was convicted in Somerset, England of stealing fowls and transported for fourteen years arriving on board the ship ‘The Burrell’. He arrived in New South Wales, Australia on 18 December 1830. John was able to read and write and was 27 years old at the time. He left wife Mary and his three children behind in England.

 

John was assigned to Robert Johnston, son of George and Esther Johnston on their estates at Bankstown and Cabramatta, and was eventually employed as an overseer to David Johnston at Johnston’s Meadows, Albion Park. He received his Ticket of Leave in 1837 after serving half of his sentence.

 

John’s first wife Mary and his son Charles, died in England not long after his arrival in the colony.

 

On 10 August 1839[1], John married Irish immigrant and ex-convict Mary Steel at Dapto, Wollongong, New South Wales and they had five children

 

John Hockey and Mary Steel had the following children:

 

1. Thomas Hockey was born on 22 August 1840 in Wollongong, New South Wales. He died on 13 July 1913 in Windellama, New South Wales.

 

2. James Hockey was born on 03 November 1841 in Albion Park, New South Wales. He died on 26 June 1886 in New South Wales.

 

3. John Hockey was born on 02 February 1843 in Albion Park, New South Wales. He died on 08 October 1930 in Nambour, Queensland.

 

4. Robert Hockey was born in 1845. He died in 1923 in Braidwood, New South Wales.

 

5. Dennis Daniel Hockey was born in 1847 in Albion Park, New South Wales. He died in 1927 in Nambour, Queensland.

 

Soon after son Dennis was born, Mary Hockey also died.

 

John remarried for the third time to another Irish immigrant, Mary McGowen.

 

John Hockey and Mary McGowen had the following child:

 

1. Robert Daniel Hockey was born in 1848 in Albion Park, New South Wales. He died on 06 May 1923 in Braidwood, New South Wales.

 

John died on 13 October 1878[2] in Cambewarra, New South Wales, age 75.

Two of John son’s from England, Samuel and Enos, came to Australia and married here. John and

Mary Steel’s children married into the Ryan, Warrington, Perkins and Pearson families.

John died 21 October 1878 at Cambewarra and is buried there.
