Charles Langley was born on 11 May 1838 in Gretton, Northamptonshire, England as the first child of Thomas Langley and Elizabeth Joyce. He had three siblings, namely: Sarah, Mary, and Thomas.

 

Charles immigrated to Australia on the "Monica" in 18 August 1857.  According to the ship list, he was 19, a labourer, he was Church of England, he could read and write, and his mother was dead.

 

When he was 20, Charles married Emma Shergold, daughter of Thomas Shergold and Clara Smith, in 1859[1]  in Kiama, New South Wales.

 

Charles Langley and Emma Shergold had the following children:

 

1. Clara Elizabeth Langley was born on 26 January 1860 in Berry, New South Wales, Australia. She married John William Timbs in 1883 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. Clara died on 25 October 1936 in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia.

 

2. Sarah Langley was born in 1861 in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. She died in 1866 in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia.

 

3. Mary Ann Langley was born in 1863 in Kangaroo Mount, near Berry, New South Wales, Australia. She married Charles Hockey in 1882 in Kangaroo Mount, near Berry, New South Wales, Australia. Mary  died on 13 March 1951 in Casino, New South Wales, Australia.

 

4. Charles Henry Langley was born in 1865 in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. He died in 1866 in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia.

 

5. Emma Langley was born in 1867 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. She married Thomas Gloag in 1887 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. She married Eustace Thomas Tribe in 1899 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Emma died on 18 June 1920 in Berry, New South Wales, Australia.

 

6. Thomas Henry Langley was born in 1869 in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. He married Jane White in 1899 in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. Thomas died in 1943 in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia.

 

7. William Langley was born in 1872 in Berrima, New South Wales, Australia. He married Elizabeth Margaret Gray in 1897 in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. He married Grace Wishart in 1933 in Kyogle, New South Wales, Australia. William died in April 1952 in Kyogle, New South Wales, Australia.

 

8. Amy Jane Langley was born in 1875 in Berrima, New South Wales, Australia. She married John Alexander Maxwell in 1895 in Gerringong, New South Wales, Australia. Amy died in 1956 in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia.

 

9. John Charles Langley was born in 1876 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. He married Hilda Capewell Ross in 1904 in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia. John died on 03 February 1953 in Cootamundra, New South Wales, Australia.

 

10. George Langley was born on 30 October 1878 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. He married Florence Rose Manson in 1900 in Albion Park, New South Wales, Australia. George died in 1960 in Auburn, New South Wales, Australia.

 

11. Arthur Langley was born on 06 October 1880 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. He married Florance Martha MacDonald on 24 November 1909 in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. Arthur died on 23 June 1964 in Lambton, New South Wales, Australia.

 

12. Eva Langley was born in 1883 in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. She married William Esau Longbottom in 1904 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Eva died on 01 December 1927 in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, Australia.

 

13. Robert Langley was born in 1886 in Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia. He married Linda Constance Hanson in 1915 in Ashfield, New South Wales, Australia. Robert died in 1969 in Newtown, New South Wales, Australia.

 

Charles died on 20 May 1917[2]  in Kiama, New South Wales, age 79.

Mr. Charles Langley, a very old resident of Marshall Mount, passed away at the residence of his daughter Mrs. C. E. Timbs on Sunday last at the age of 79 years says the "Mercury." The deceased gentleman had not been in good health for some time, but his death was unexpected. He was an old resident of the South Coast and came to Kiama about 60 years ago, and spent the greater part of his life in the Kiama and Berry district. Mr. Langley was a great reader, and took great interest in all the leading subjects of the day. His wife pre-deceased him 12 years ago since when he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. C. Timbs. He leaves a family of six sons and six daughters to mourn their loss. The remains were interred in the Methodist cemetery Marshall Mount, the Rev. S. Fleming conducting the last sad rites at the graveside. The funeral was a lengthy one of many old friends and connections.
