Alice Ross was born on 15 May 1853 in Forres, Moray, Scotland as the first child of Angus Ross and Ann Mclennan. She had three siblings, namely: William Monsoon, Alexander, and Ann.

 

When she was 18, Alice married John Tutty, son of Edward Tutty and Fanny Frances Green, in 1872[1] in Queensland, Australia.

 

John Tutty and Alice Ross had the following children:

 

1. Alice Eveline Tutty was born in 1873 in Queensland, Australia. She married Arthur Thomas Ewins on 30 December 1901 in St.Alban's, Highgate, Western Australia. She died in 1954 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia.

 

2. Edward John Tutty was born in 1874 in Queensland, Australia. He married Elizabeth Constance Hooke in 1932 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He died in 1942 in Walcha, New South Wales, Australia.

 

3. Violet Frances Tutty was born in 1877 in Queensland, Australia. She died in 1877 in Queensland, Australia.

 

John Tutty had been sick with a fever for some time, and while in a delirious state in the morning of 3 July 1879[2] endeavored to leave his room, he fell and struck his head against an open drawer of a wardrobe, inflicting a slight wound. John died a few minutes after, leaving Alice a widow with two small children.

 

When she was 26, Alice married John Wallis Rutter in 1880[3] in Queensland, Australia.

 

John was employed as a conveyancer when they married.

 

John Wallis Rutter and Alice Ross had the following children:

 

1. Angus Wallis Rutter was born in 1881 in Queensland, Australia. He married Lilian May Smith on 08 February 1908 in Perth Baptist Church, Perth, Western Australia, Australia. He died on 27 March 1945 in Western Australia, Australia.

 

2. Charles Elsford Rutter was born in 1884 in Queensland, Australia. He married Lucy Jane Robottom on 28 February 1912 in Subiaco, Western Australia, Australia. He died in 1959 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia.

 

3. Claude Maximilian Rutter was born in 1888 in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. He married Jessie Anderson on 17 December 1921 in St. George's Cathedral, Perth, Western Australia. He died in 1946 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia.

 

4. Arthur Norman Rutter was born in 1894 in Balmain, New South Wales, Australia. He married Marjorie Ockenden in 1916 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. He died in 1948 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia.

 

John Wallis Rutter was the Mayor of North Rockhampton in 1887. He was arrested on 30 December, on a charge of forgery a promissory-note, purporting to be signed by William Whitman of the Union Bank of nearly £13,000. While in custody, he attempted suicide and was moved to the Goal hospital.

 

He was found guilty and sentenced in January 1888 to seven years penal servitude at St Helena Island prison for forgery. In June 1890, a petition was taken around asking for his release.

 

He was released from prison on 25 September 1892, after serving four and a half years, for exceptional Good Conduct. After being released, the family moved to New South Wales where Arthur was born in 1894. They then moved to Subiaco , Western Australia.

 

John died on 22 June 1901[4] in Perth, Western Australia, Australia, age 51.

 

Alice died on 27 June 1929[5] in Subiaco, Western Australia, age 76. She is buried with John and their son Angus in Karrakatta Cemetery and Crematorium, Perth, Western Australia.

Mr. John Tutty, of the firm of Tutty and Finney, drapers, Fortitude Valley, died rather unexpectedly yesterday morning. Mr. Tutty had been ill of fever for some time, and while in a delirious state yesterday morning endeavored to leave his room. In doing so he fell and struck his head against an open drawer of a wardrobe, inflicting a slight wound. Death ensued a few minutes after. Mr. Tutty was an old resident of the Valley, and was very generally liked and esteemed. He leaves a wife and two children. His funeral takes place at 3 o'clock this afternoon.

ROCKHAMPTON  December 30. - John Wallace Rutter, Mayor of North Rockhampton, was arrested this eveningon charges of forgery. The affair has caused great excitement. It is rumoured that the amount for which accused forged promissory notes and issued them reaches nearly £10,000.

Alleged Extensive Forgeries in Rockhampton. -  John Wallis Rutter, Mayor of North Rockhampton, was arrested last week on a charge of forgery, The forgeries are believed to extend to nearly £13,000. Rutter was arrested on a charge of forging and uttering a promissory-note, purporting to be signed by William Whitman of the Union Bank ; two others on the same bank for £1000 and £500 respectively, and one on the A, J. S. Bank for £250. Butter is said te have speculated largely in land and mining. The affair has caused great consternation, as he was a man greatly esteemed. He was to have been the Liberal candidate for North Rockhampton at the general election. He was admitted to bail by the Police Magistrate in a sum of £800 ; but in consequence of his having attempted to commit suicide, is now in the gaol hospital.
