Alfred Herman Ehlert was born in 1884[1] in Queensland, Australia as the fourth child of Herman Ehlert and Augusta Frederica Nachki. He had four siblings, namely: Albert, Teresa, George August, and Martha (Wilhelmina) Auguste.

 

Alfred joined the Australian Imperial Force (Australian Military Forces) on 26 May 1916.

He was listed as a Labourer, aged 30 years 6 months when he enlisted in Bundaberg. His religion was Church Of England.

 

On 25 October 1916 he embarked Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses A38 Private in 10 Machine Gun Company - 1 to 6 Reinforcements (May-December 1916).

 

On 28 December 1916 he disembarked at Plymouth England and on the 31 December,  marched in to 6-7 camp

 

On 3 January 1917 he marched in from 6-7 camp to Perham downs.

 

On 7 January 1917 he marched out to Grantham.

 

On 28 February 1917 he sailed to France on SS "Invictor" from Grantham.

 

On 19 April 1917 he marched out to unit at Camiers, France.

On 08 June1917, he was admitted to hospital in France after being gassed on the Somme by an enemy shell.

 

On 10 June 1917 he was moved to Belgium where he was classified as "Wounded In Action - (GAS POISON SHELL)"

 

On 12 June 1917 he was transferred to England

 

On 14 June1917 he was admitted on hospital in Birmingham, England.

 

On 26 July 1917 he went furlo until 9 August1917 where he rejoined the battle via ship to France.

 

On 4 April1918, suffering from pain in the back, he was admitted to hospital in Camiers, France with Myalgia (muscle pain). He was discharged from hospital on 23 April1918

 

Shortly after on 22 June 1918 he was admitted to sick base with Hacmaturia (passage of blood in the urine) and both his kidneys were tender. It was reported he has Cloudy urine.

 

On 29th June 1918, he was transferred to 45th Stat. Hospital with Filaria (or philariasis, a parasitic disease caused by an infection with roundworms of the Filarioidea type).

 

On 10 July 1918 he was transferred from France to England, where he was admitted 1st LG Hospital, in Camberwell, still with Filaria.

 

On 23 July 1918 he was transferred to Australian Auxilliary Hospital (Harefield House - the former stately home taken over by the No. 1 Australians (1AAH) in 1915.

 

On 27 July 1918 he was discharged with 50% disability payments.

 

On 2 August 1918, he returned to Australia.

 

He died in March 1925[2] in Queensland, Australia.

 

He was buried on 24 March 1925 in Mount Morgan Cemetry
