Alexander Robertson was born on 29 November 1795 in Spott, East Lothian, Scotland as the eighth child of John Robertson and Isabella Brown. He had eight siblings, namely: Isabella, Robert, Helen, Jean, Peter, Robert, Katharine, and John.

Alexander Robertson married Agnes Purves.

Alexander Robertson and Agnes Purves had the following children:

1. John Robertson was born in 1831 in Coldingham, Berwickshire, Scotland. He married Margaret Maven in 1856 in Berwickshire, Scotland. He died on 26 December 1892 in Eumundi, Queensland, Australia.

2. Mary Robertson was born in Scotland. She died in 1932.

Alexander died on 30 October 1862 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland.
