"There is nothing more difficult to carry out,

nor more doubtful of success,

nor more dangerous to handle,

than to initiate a new order of things.

For the reformer has enemies in all those who profit by the old order,

and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new."
Machiavelli 1642

From a Firefighters Perspective

There has been a lot of confusion in the past with terms such as flashover, backdraft, roll over etc.
In this section I will try to describe the term flashover from a firefighters perspective.

When a fire is burning in a compartment, most of the smoke is unable to escape and begins to accumulate. Because the smoke is heated, it is buoyant and will rise to the ceiling. As the amount of smoke increases the smoke level will get lower and denser. It is vital to understand that the smoke contains a certain amount of "un-burnt fuel", so as the smoke accumulates, so does the amount of un-burnt fuel vapour. Eventually there will be enough un-burnt fuel to form a flammable mixture.

"Reading the Fire" Every fire sends out signals that can assist the firefighter in determining the stage of fire development, and most importantly the changes that are likely to occur. The skill of being able to "read a fire" is the mark of a firefighter who is able to make decisions based on knowledge and experience, not guess work or luck.
