GEDCOM 3:  Save the file to disk

Fig 6.8 Save the file dialogue
The save file dialogue window will appear, in which we need to set a few items:
  •  navigate to a folder as a storage place to save the file (CLEMENS_TREE);
  • give the file a name;
  • define the file type as a GEDCOM (*.GED).
  • save the file.

It is important to use the drop down arrow in the Save as type window, and select GEDCOM (*.GED).

Fig 6.9  Export in a GEDCOM format

After we click on Save in the above illustration, an Export to GEDCOM dialogue box will show up as on the right:

  • Set FTW (Family Tree Maker file extension) as a destination for the file, if it is known that the file will be imported into Family Tree Maker; if not then there is another option for an unknown destination;
  • Set GEDCOM Version 5.5 (the latest);
  • Use ANSI (American National Standards Institute) for the Character set;
  • Leave Indent records blank;
  • Tick Abbreviated tags.

Click on OK and the GEDCOM file will be written to the hard disk.  It's as simple as that!
The size of this demonstration GEDCOM file, when stored on a hard disk, is about 103 KB and it should transmit over a 56K modem in about 25-30 seconds.

The final stage of this export process is to attach the stored GEDCOM file to an email and send it to a recipient.  As an alternative the file could be saved to a floppy disk and surface-mailed or handed to another person.

OK. Let's have a look at importing a GEDCOM file. [Click here to continue]
