Scanning 5: JPEG Files

Fig 5.4 Saving a file as a JPEG

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Expert Group. It is a file storage standard that allows large files to be stored on a disk in a very economical form.  The file is compressed on storage and the user has the option of selecting the degree of compression.  High compression means a small stored file but a low quality image on de-compression.  Usually about a 25% compression gives a good reduction  in file storage while keeping a high quality image when de-compressed.  Web browsers often display JPEG images.  The file extension on a PC is usually ".JPG".
