Fig
5.3 Image scanned into Photoshop
A summary of the editing work:
- The photograph has been cropped to an oval
to remove the frame and the unwanted background.
- A slight feathering, or fading of the oval
edge, has been introduced.
- Dust marks and other blemishes have been
removed.
- The physical size of the image has been
set to 240 x 365 pixels. About the same size as the original. The
ruler is measuring pixels.
- The dpi (dots per inch) or ppi
(pixels per inch) has been set to 72 dpi. Matches the monitor
resolution, therefore the file size will be kept at a minimum. (There
are about 72 pixels per inch).
- The file is then saved to disk as a JPEG
(Joint Photographic Expert Group) file type to reduce the byte size of
the stored file. Good for storage and loading into a Family Tree
Maker database as well as displaying on the web in a browser. The
original file byte size was 59 KB (saved as a Photoshop file), but when
saved as a JPEG the file size, reduce to 17 KB. A
good reduction in storage space for the file without reducing the
quality of the displayed image unnecessarily.
