Activity:  Search for an Ancestor

Over to you to use the Internet and FamilySearch in an attempt to find one of your own ancestors.  Someone from a previous generation in your family whom you reasonably expect to be recorded on the International Genealogical Index.  For example someone who was born/married/died between 1850-1900.  If you get a positive result record it by printing the web page on your local printer or save the web page to your hard disk as an HTML file.

The Internet address or URL (Universal Resource Locator) is http://www.familysearch.org/   However before you go to this address make sure that you have bookmarked the address of this course in your browser Favourites so that you can easily come back to the course.  The web is a great place for getting lost and you are encouraged to use bookmarks to note the important web sites that you use.

Please do not be discouraged if you fail to find any positive results from FamilySearch.  Even though we know that the names we enter in the search criteria fields are correct it is a common experience that FamilySearch is unable to find the record.  Try alternative spellings.  Do use the searching tips in FamilySearch to get to know ways of maximising search techniques.  Often we find that a simple request is better than a complex one.  Start with a simple request and slowly add further details.

Click on http://www.familysearch.org/  to locate FamilySearch on the Internet.  Explore FamilySearch and then come back to this point in the course to continue, either by using the back button, or the Favorite that you have stored in your browser.
