Title: The Birth of NERV
Eye-catch Title: He was aware that he was still a child
Synopsis: Kaji makes a phone call from a public phone using his NERV card. He believes that the red card is an appropriate color as it is "like blood" and as this will probably be his last mission. Elsewhere, Commander Fuyutsuki has been kidnapped, and some NERV agents request Misato's NERV ID card and gun as she is on the suspect list, as is Ryoji Kaji. In actual fact, Commander Fuyutsuki is being held by SEELE, who are interrogating him in the most harsh way. Fuyutsuki begins retelling his life, starting from 1999 A.D., when he was a professor at a university. He talks about how he met Yui Ikari, when she was a student of his, and how he became the advisor for a man named Gendou Rokubungi after Gendou was involved in a brawl. He went on to express his shock after he was told that Yui was dating Gendou, and the horrible period of time after the Second Impact in 2000-2001 A.D. He became highly suspicious of Gendou after he learned that he had conveniently returned home one day before the Second Impact, and was even more horrified when he was told that Gendou and Yui were married and had a son. Gendou later invited Fuyutsuki to join him in "creating a new genesis for mankind."
A year of so later in the year 2002 A.D., they recovered the sole witness survivor of the Second Impact, Misato Katsuragi, daughter of Dr. Katsuragi, who had perished. She was mute for two years, but then made up for it in college where she met Ritsuko Akagi, daughter of Dr. Naoko Akagi, and talked almost non-stop (according to Ritsuko, lol ^_~). Around that time, Misato also met Ryoji Kaji, for whom she missed a whole week of school for (^_~ I say no more!). At Gehirn, Yui had died in a freak accident involving an Eva, and Shinji had witnessed the whole thing, although he was too young at that time to know what was going on. Naoko had hoped for this whole incident to happen, as she was having an affair with Gendou. Gendou later introduced the whole of Gehirn to a child named Rei Ayanami, whom he claimed he was looking after for an associate. Much to Naoko's horror, however, she found that Rei resembled Yui. Later, after young Rei had the following conversation with Naoko, she was strangled by Naoko, and Naoko, realizing what she had done, died a tragic and bloody death.
Rei: I lost my way, Doctor
Naoko: Would you like me to help you find your way back?
Rei: No thanks
Naoko: But how will you get home?
Rei: That's none of your business, old hag.
Naoko (mumbling): Old hag?
Rei: I can find my own way home, old hag
Naoko: You know, you really shouldn't call people that
Rei: But that's what you are, aren't you?
Naoko: I'm getting angry now. Commander Ikari is going to spank you for this.
Rei: But he's the one who calls you that. He says "That old hag is no use anymore. That old hag is annoying."
Needless the say, Naoko threw a fit, and Gehirn was no more -- the whole team formed an organization known as NERV.
Back to present time, 2015 A.D., Kaji enters the dark SEELE room and unties the ropes from Fuyutsuki's hands. Fuyutsuki tells Kaji that "they" will kill him for this, but Kaji says all he wants is to get closer to the truth. Elsewhere, Misato sits alone in the dark in the isolation ward, hating the darkness, when the NERV agent enter and return her items, telling her she can go now. When Misato asks, "where is he?" the agent replies, "I wouldn't know that," and leaves. Again elsewhere, Kaji stands alone near a giant fan, with his hands in his pockets. He smiles as someone arrives and says, extremely good-naturedly, "Hi. You're late." A gun shot is heard resounding in the darkness, and in the next scene Misato's door slams shut as she enters her home. Misato looks tired and considerably upset, and falls onto the table. When she looks up she sees that there is a message for her on her answering machine. With trembling hands she pushes the button, and Kaji's voice is heard. He tells her he's sorry for all the trouble he has caused to her and Ritsuko, and that the truth is with her. He also asks her to water his plants for him, and that Shinji knows where they are. He ends the message by saying, "If I see you again, I will say the words that I could not say 8 years ago. Bye." Misato weeps loudly for him and cries, "you're such a fool. You've always been such a fool." Shinji, who is in his room hears Misato's cries, and comes out to look. He, however, returns to his room and hides his head under his pillow. "All I could do was run, run away from Misato. There was nothing I could do. I was just a child."

Title: At least, Be Humane

Synopsis: Flashback: Asuka as a child, being neglected by her scientist mother, who would rather talk to a doll than her. When her mother dies, Asuka tells her grandmother that she will never cry because she has to look after herself now. Present time: Asuka sits inside Unit 02, as Ritsuko tells her to concentrate like she did last time, as her synch ratio has dropped 8 points. Asuka cries, "I'm trying to!"
Asuka, Shinji and Misato are having a very quiet dinner together, but there is an air of gloom apparent. Asuka states that she has finished and stands up to leave, but then the phone rings. Asuka ignores it which makes Misato protest, "Asuka!" Asuka replies, "You should answer your own phone! It's probably just Kaji calling for you anyway!" Misato sadly says, "He won't call again." Asuka is a little taken aback by this, but then Shinji sighs and goes to answer the phone. This makes Asuka retort, "Ah, the invincible Shinji stoops to answer the phone! He doesn't just save the world!" However, much to Asuka's irritation, Shinji ignores her and instead hands her the phone saying that it's her mother from Germany. Asuka snatches the phone from Shinji and has a long conversation with her mother in German. Shinji has been watching Asuka the whole time and when she finally gets off the phone tells her that he wishes he could talk to his mother like that. Asuka replies that its overrated, and that the relationship that she and her mother has is all fake, but then suddenly yells, "Why in the hell am I telling you all this?!" and walks off.
Asuka has been having trouble synching with her Unit 02, and when she enters the elevators is annoyed to find that Rei is in there too. After a long silence, Rei says quietly, "If you don't open up to her, your Eva won't respond to you." This makes Asuka throw a fit and she calls Rei a "doll" as Rei would do anything her Commander tells her to do. Rei replies, "I am not a doll." Asuka insists that she is and slaps her before backing out of the elevator and telling Rei that she hates her. Later, when Angel #15 is detected in orbit above earth, Asuka is told to back up Rei. (Unit 01 is still in crio-stasus) Asuka is angered at this and launches her Eva anyway. Ritsuko yells for Asuka, but Misato tells her to let Asuka go. Asuka prepares to fire at the orbiting Angel, but just before she can, a strange shaft of light glares down on Asuka, causing her to lose control of the weapon. She begins firing aimlessly, clutching her head in pain. The Angel begins defiling her mind, bringing up memories that she wanted to forget. Despite her screams for help, Misato and the other's can't do anything to the Angel while it is still in orbit. Shinji begs his father to let him help Asuka, but Commander Fuyutsuki states that its too risky. Gendou then, much to the shock of everybody, orders Rei to go down and retrieve the Lance of Longinus. Rei does so, and hurls the Lance at the Angel. It easily pierces the Angel's AT Field and is annihilated. The Lance remains in orbit, as they are unable to "retrieve an object of that much mass." (Hyuga). Asuka is rescued, but she is far from okay. She is bitter and tells Shinji that she would have rather died that have Rei save her.

Title: Tear

Synopsis: Asuka spends her nights at Hikari's house playing computer games and misses school. As she lies next the Hikari in the bed, she apologizes for inconveniencing Hikari, but Hikari tells her that she's not an inconvenience. Asuka then tells Hikari that she feels so worthless and that she doesn't even care about anything anymore. She then begins to cry. The next day, a strange halo-looking tube is detected, its blood pattern changing from orange to blue and back again. It is the 16th Angel, and Misato rushes to NERV to begin their assault on it. Rei is sent out in Unit 00, and before she can even react, the tube plunges itself into the Eva. Rei tries shooting at it, but the bullets just rebound off. The Angel begins contaminating her, fusing itself into her flesh. Rei is becoming contaminated at a fast rate, and hallucinates about herself talking with another Rei. She is surprised when she sees tears falling onto her lap. Misato launches Unit 02 and tells Asuka to lighten the pressure on Rei, but Unit 02 doesn't move. To their horror, they realize that Asuka can't synch with her Eva anymore! Misato quickly orders Unit 02 to be withdrawn, as Asuka is "just a sitting duck out there!" At this point, Gendou decides to let Unit 01 go out, much to the shock of everybody there. Shinji makes his way over to help Rei, but the tube lunges at him also, and he dodges just in time. Rei refuses to let Shinji die so she sacrifices herself to save Shinji by placing her Eva in D-mode and self-destructing, bringing the Angel along with her. Her last image is Gendou Ikari's smiling face.
Shinji is upset about Rei's death and closes himself off from Misato and everyone else. Misato feels the loneliness as well; even Pen^2 won't respond to her. However, a little later she receives a phone call and is notified that Rei is alive and in hospital. Misato immediately calls for Shinji and they rush to the hospital. There Shinji thanks Rei for saving him, but she does not seem to remember anything. Meanwhile, Gendou has sent Ritsuko for SEELE to look at, instead of Rei. Shinji later receives a phone call from Ritsuko telling him to meet her at NERV. There he and Misato are shown the secrets of NERV, from the Eva graveyard to the central dogma where all the Rei clones are contained. Shinji and Misato are shocked by all the clones, and even more so when Ritsuko destroys them. Misato holds a gun to her and tells her to stop, but Ritsuko falls down onto her knees and weeps and tells Misato that she wants to die. Misato lowers the gun and says, "If you really want that, then you are a fool." As Misato watches the last fragments of the Rei clones dissolve away, she wonders about the curse that seems to befall anyone associated with the Evas.
