Title: Magma Diver

Synopsis: Kaji takes Asuka shopping for some new clothes and she picks up a red and white bikini. They then have lunch and Asuka tells him how excited she is about the school trip to Okinawa where they get to go scuba diving. She then asks Kaji where he went for his school trip and he says that he didn't have one. When she questions why, he replies, "Something called the Second Impact." Later when Asuka is at home, she is throwing a fit because Misato tells her that she can't go to the school trip. She yells, "What idiot decided that?!" and Misato replies, "This one." Misato then explains that it would be dangerous if an Angel attacked while they were away. Asuka then turns to Shinji, who is drinking a cup of tea, and tells him to stand up like a man. However, Shinji replies that he already suspected that they wouldn't be able to go, and Asuka says, "So you've given up already?"
Shinji: "Yup."
Asuka: "Pathetic. There's nothing like a house-broken male."
Shinji: "Hey, don't talk about me that way!"
Misato quickly interrupts and says that this is a good opportunity to catch up on their studies while their classmates are away. She then holds up their report disks and tells them that she is very disappointed with their grades. Asuka retorts that the numerical grading system that the Japanese use is stupid and Misato tells her that she should at least, "...try to adapt to Japanese school-life!" To which Asuka screams, "THIIIIIS SUUUCKS!!!!"
Asuka and Shinji watch their classmates fly off, and later that day, Shinji sits by his laptop doing his Physics homework, by the swimming pool where Rei is swimming. Asuka voice is heard asking him what he's doing and he says Physics. He looks up and is shocked by what Asuka is wearing -- a red and white bikini. She then bends down over him to see his computer screen, making him very embarrassed. She solves most of the questions easily and Shinji asks how come she's doing some bad in school, if she finds this so easy. Asuka then tells him that she's graduated from college, but she can't understand the Kanji in the questions. She then asks him what the next question says and he tells her it's one on thermal expansion. Asuka then embarrasses him even more by placing her hands on her breasts and saying, "If I were to warm up my breasts like this, do you think they'll get bigger or smaller?" Shinji quickly turns away, extremely flushed and and mumbles, "I don't know! I don't think about stuff like that!" To which Asuka says, "What a boring little boy," and walks off. Shinji looks over at Rei who has just gotten out of the pool, but Asuka tells him to look at her while she back-rolls into the pool. Shinji sighs.
A mysterious object is detected in a volcano, and Major Katsuragi and her NERV technician, Makoto Hyuga, go up to the lab there to try and discover what it is. They find that the blood pattern is blue, so Misato is sure that it's an Angel. She takes control of the lab, saying that, "this laboratory is under the jurisdiction of NERV." She calls back to NERV and tells them to send the Evangelions. Commander Ikari proposes to SEELE that they try and capture this Angel, which is in a chrysalis form, and the SEELE monoliths tell him he cannot fail, or else there may be another Second Impact. To Shinji's surprise, Asuka is selected to execute the operation, while he and Rei are backup. Asuka puts on a red plugsuit, similar to her own, but when she presses the switch on her right wrist, it expands out like a balloon, making her shriek in alarm in German. Her Unit 02 is encased in D-type equipment ("...equipment for high duress, not fashion," as Ritsuko said.), making Asuka even more upset. She yells that this stupid sort of stuff is what Shinji does, not her. Just then Kaji calls to her from the balcony that he was hoping to see her in action, which makes her scream and hide. She whimpers to Ritsuko that she can't let Kaji see her like this. Rei raises her hand and offers to go in Unit 02, which makes Asuka come out and slap her hand saying, "The only way you're going in my Unit 02 is over my dead body!" Reluctantly Asuka decides to go, rather than letting Rei.
Tensions run high, as Asuka and Unit 02 are lowered into the lava. After exceeding the maximum allowed depth, and losing her prog knife, Asuka spots the Angel, and the capture is successful, much to the relief of everybody. As Asuka is ascending, Ritsuko asks Misato if she was scared, and Misato says that she was, because if anything went wrong it could result in another Second Impact. But just then, the Angel begins hatching! Misato quickly tells Asuka to abort the capture and prepare for combat. Misato then changes the operation. However, Asuka remembers that she has lost her prog knife and has to dodge the Angel. Misato then tells Asuka that she's going to drop her Unit 01's prog knife. Shinji ditches the prog knife into the lava, but the Angel is approaching at a fast pace. Asuka gets the prog knife, just as the Angel attacks her, opening its mouth to bite into the encased Unit 02. Ritsuko yells, "No! How can it open it's mouth in molten lava?!" Asuka digs the knife into the Angel, but all that results are sparks. Shinji then yells, "Think physics!" and Asuka responds, "Thermal expansion!" She cuts her coolant tube, and tells Ritsuko to funnel all the coolant into the Angel. They do so, and Asuka violently stabs the Angel, which tears her supporting cables before dissolving. Asuka softly mumbles, "I did it. But that's it. I'm done for." The last shred of her cable breaks away and she begins falling deeper into the lava. But then a hand grabs onto her and she looks up shocked. She then sees it Shinji and smiles. "Idiot. You show-off."
Shinji and Pen^2 are relaxing in a hot spring on one side of a wooden wall, while Misato and Asuka are on the other. Shinji sighs and says, "I didn't know a bath could feel so good." Misato calls for him to throw over the body shampoo because they've run out, and Shinji does so. However, Asuka shrieks at him because he hit her in her most "privatest part." Misato is heard tending to her, and Shinji is getting more and more flushed as he listens to them. Pen^2 then stares at him, and Shinji screams and dives back into the water. He thinks, "Thermal expansion...how embarrassing." Over the other side Misato and Asuka talk, and Misato tells her that the scar on her chest is from the Second Impact. Asuka then looks down and says to Misato, "You know everything about me....and my past." Misato then tells her that its her job, but she should try and forget it all now.

Title: SEELE, Throne of Souls

Synopsis: Most of this episode is made up of a recap on all the happenings covered in Evangelion so far. After that, Rei's poem is read out by her, something she is silently reciting as she sits in Unit 01. Ritsuko asks her how it feels to be inside another Eva, and she says, "It smells like Ikari." However, all readings seem to be normal. Asuka is also tested, but she is still inside her usual Unit 02, and is informed that everything is normal, to which she mutters, "of course I'm normal." Shinji is now placed inside Unit 00, and echos the words of Rei when asked how it feels. "It smells like Rei." Asuka begans mocking Shinji, and is told off by Ritsuko. As Shinji sits inside Unit 00, he begins to have flashing images of Rei's past, and grips his head in pain. Suddenly, the Eva goes berserker and starts smashing the wall, trying to get through. Rei stands watching quietly, and Misato shouts for her to get out of the way. They manage to shut down the Evangelion, and when Shinji wakes up, he is in a hospital bed. He sighs and says, "I hate this ceiling." Meanwhile, Ritsuko is told by Misato to organize things back to normal ASAP, and as Misato walks away, Ritsuko contemplates the fact that Unit 00 was after her (Ritsuko). Elsewhere, Asuka ponders on the day's happening as she lies in bed that night. She begins to see Rei as being more than she had initially thought. "Just what is the First Child?"

Title: Lie and Silence
Eye-catch Title: Those women who longed for the touch of other's lips and thus invited their kisses
Synopsis: Commander Ikari and Commander Fuyutsuki are in a helicopter, flying high as they speak about SEELE and the Instrumentality Project. Meanwhile, below and far away, Kaji waits silently for someone. As the door knobs turns, Kaji reaches for his gun and slides next to the door. It opens slightly, and a voice says, "It's me." Kaji looks and replies, "So it is." He begins corresponding with his contact as she pretends to be reading a magazine and feeding cats. She tells him to investigate NERV, and not to get too involved in the Marduk Institute or SEELE, but Kaji says he can't help it. At the school, Asuka rings Kaji, but gets his answering machine. She screams into the phone, pretending that a guy is taking advantage of her. Hikari comes out of the classroom and asks Asuka what she's doing, and Asuka complains that Kaji is never home. Hikari then begs Asuka to go out on a date with a friend of her sister's, and Asuka reluctantly agrees. Inside the class, Shinji watches Rei wring the cloth as she is wiping the floor, and gets smacked on the head with a broom by Toji, who tells him to get back to work.
At NERV, just as the children are finishing their harmonics tests, Ritsuko comments to Misato that Shinji is more subdued than usual. Misato reminds Ritsuko that "tomorrow is the day." When Shinji is in the elevator with Rei, he asks her what he should say to his dad when he sees him tomorrow.
Rei: "I don't understand. Why are you asking me?"
Shinji: "Because I've seen you talking with my father and actually...enjoying it."
Shinji: "Say, my father...what's he like?"
Rei: "I don't know."
Shinji then goes on to tell Rei that earlier when she was wringing the cloth, she reminded him of a mother and that she would make a great mother. Rei blushes and replies, "You...embarrass me."
Later, Misato comes home, after purchasing a new dress for the wedding. She finds Asuka watching TV and asks her how come she's not in bed yet, especially since she has a date tomorrow. Asuka unenthusiastically replies that it's just some med student and instead asks Misato if she could borrow her Lavender perfume. Misato says that it's not for kids and asks if Shinji is in his room. Asuka replies that he's been in there all day, worrying about how he's seeing his father tomorrow. Misato knocks on Shinji's door and opens it slightly, only to find him curled up on the bed. Misato tells him to be strong, because he'll also be seeing "her" too. The next day, Misato, Asuka and Shinji go to their respective destinations for the day. Misato is seen with Ritsuko at the wedding, and the seat next to her reserved for Kaji remains empty. Misato blows off his name slip just as he arrives, smiling and apologizing for being late. Misato is unimpressed and tells him to shave off his stubble. She tightens his tie for him and he thanks her. Meanwhile, Shinji is with his father, visiting his mother's grave. They talk about her for a little while, but then a large helicopter arrives and Gendo turns to leave. Shinji sees Rei inside the plane, and yells to his father that he was glad that they could do this. The Commander simply replies "Indeed" before he leaves.
Shinji is next seen by himself at home, playing the cello. When he finishes, he is startled to hear someone clapping behind him. He turns to see Asuka come in and she tells him that what he played was very nice. Shinji questions how come she's home so early since she's supposed to be on a date, and she casually replies that her date was more boring than him, so she ditched him while they were waiting for the rollercoaster. Meanwhile, Kaji, Misato and Ritsuko are drinking in a bar after the wedding when Misato says she has to go freshen up. Ritsuko tells Kaji that Misato is drinking too much and losing her control, but Kaji justs says that everybody has to do it sometime. Ritsuko then asks Kaji what he was doing in Kyoto and he quickly denies it. Ritsuko friendly advises Kaji not to get involved, or else he'll get burned, but he simply replies with a witty comment. Just then Misato returns, and Ritsuko conveniently leaves. Misato then rings Shinji and tells him not to wait up for her as she will be out drinking with Kaji. This makes Asuka mad. As Kaji is carrying a drunk Misato home, they talk about their past, and Misato breaks down saying how she failed as a guardian and how she is not better than Shinji, running away from her problems. When she refuses to stop even after Kaji tells her its enough, he silences her with a kiss. Back at home, Asuka surprises Shinji by asking him if he wants to kiss her, just because she's bored. They kiss, and Asuka is holding Shinji's nose, making him turn red then blue. When they finally break off, he is gasping for air, and she runs to the bathroom and screams in disgust. Just then, Kaji arrives with Misato and they place her gently on her bed. Asuka tries to get Kaji to stay for the night, but he declines, and is unusually serious with her. She then realizes that she can smell Misato's Lavender perfume on him. This causes Asuka to get extremely upset and she blames Shinji.
Rei Ayanami is absent from school again, instead she is taking an experiment in a tube in the underground NERV facility. She opens her eyes and smiles at Commander Ikari, who smiles back. Below at Terminal Dogma, just as Kaji is sliding his NERV card to open a door, he feels a gun at the back of his head. He turns slightly and sees it's Misato.
Kaji: "Feeling better this morning, are we?"
Misato: "I'm sober now, thank you."
Misato tells Kaji that she knows that he is some sort of double agent. Kaji replies that both Ikari and Ritsuko have been hiding something from her, and swipes open the door. Pinned to a cross is Adam, the first Angel, much to Misato's shock. "You're right Kaji, I don't know NERV. I don't know NERV at all."

Episode: 16
Title: Sickness unto Death, and...
Eye-catch Title: Splitting of the Breast
Synopsis: Asuka is heard humming Fly me to the Moon as she prepares a bath, while outside in the kitchen Misato asks Shinji if he changed the soup's flavour somehow. Just as Shinji is replying, Asuka shrieks and pulls open the curtain, wrapped in a red towel. She yells that the water is too hot and Shinji apologizes. This makes her get even madder because Shinji is apologizing for nothing. He says sorry again and she goes hysterical. Misato quickly jumps to Shinji's aid, but receives an earful from Asuka as well. She accuses Misato of indecently dating Kaji and Misato forcefully denies it. Just then, the phone rings and Kaji's voice is heard offering to take Misato to a bar after work. Asuka yells even more at the startled Shinji and Misato and pulls the curtain closed.
Rei, Shinji and Asuka go for a harmonics test at NERV and it is discovered that Shinji has jumped ahead of Asuka and Rei in the synch ratios. Misato informs Shinji of this and he is very happy, but Asuka is furious. She complains to an uninterested Rei while in the change rooms later on. Angel #12, a large sphere in the sky, is spotted, except the blood pattern is not blue, but orange. Misato is puzzled and curses the fact that Commander Ikari is not here again. They dispatch the three Evangelions anyway, and Asuka taunts Shinji to be in control of the mission, since he is first in the synch tests. He takes up on the offer and this annoys Asuka even more, and she and Rei are forced to take backup positions. Misato comments that she has to chew Shinji out later on. Shinji feels he has to prove himself and instead of waiting for the two other Evas, decides to shoot the Angel himself. However, as soon as he does, the Angel seemingly vanishes! NERV is then in a state of panic as the shadow beneath Unit 01 starts to absorb Shinji and he yells for Misato. Rei and Asuka try to help him, but they are too late. Shinji disappears inside the shadow and Misato orders Unit 00 and Unit 02 to back off. Ritsuko, Misato and the rest of NERV try to find a way to retrieve Unit 01, as Shinji stays trapped inside the Angel, with a life support that lasts only 16 hours. When Ritsuko suggests that blowing up the shadow with the remaining N2 mines is their only option, no matter what happens to the pilot, Misato angrily slaps her. Ritsuko then takes control of the mission and Misato's suspicions of NERV grow larger.
Meanwhile, inside the Angel, Shinji's purification system starts to break down and the smell of blood from the LCL grows stronger. Shinji is sent into a state of panic and he tries to get out of his Eva, but finds he is stuck and cries for his friends. He begins hallucinating and having an argument with himself. After a while, his life support system ends and he lies very still. But then, he sees a vision of his mother and she asks him "is that enough?" and when he whispers a response, she replies, "well, that's good for you." Shinji's Eva then unexplainably starts back to life. He begins ripping out of Angel #12 and his Unit 01 stands horrifically, dripping in the Angel's blood. Everyone is shocked by how evil it looks and Misato again questions the true nature of NERV. Misato pulls open the hatch and calls for Shinji with tears in her eyes. As she falls on him, crying, he says to her "I just wanted to see them one more time."
As Ritsuko and Gendo watch Unit 01 get washed off, Ritsuko tells the Commander that she thinks that Misato suspects something and he replies that they should leave her be for the moment. Shinji wakes up in hospital to find Rei watching over him. She tells him to rest and quotes his mother's exact words, "well, that's good for you." which shocks him. As Rei is exiting the room, Shinji is able to see Asuka's head peeping at him and he giggles. As the door closes again, he sighs and sniffs his arm. "It still smells like blood."

Title: The 4th Child
Eye-catch Title: Fourth Children
Synopsis: Major Katsuragi is under interrogation from SEELE regarding the previous incident as she refuses to let them question Shinji as she feels he is still emotionally unstable. She answers as best as she can, and is dismissed. Commander Ikari comments that the Angels are getting more intelligent and that mankind has no more time left. Elsewhere, Toji is seen visiting his sister again at the hospital, as the nurse wardens comment among themselves about what a good brother he is. Later at Shinji's school, Toji is told that he has bulletin duty with Ayanami, and because she is absent from school again, he has to deliver the notices to her after school. Kensuke is also absent and Shinji asks Toji where he is. Toji replies he's off somewhere looking at battleships.
At NERV HQ, the whole organization is in a panic over the disappearance of NERV-02 in Nevada, USA. It seemed to have been swallowed in a Sea of Dirac like the one Unit 01 was swallowed in before. When Hikari reminds Toji that he has to deliver the bulletin to Rei, he comments that he can't go to a girl's house alone, and Hikari happily jumps at the chance to go with him. However, Toji doesn't hear her and instead calls for Shinji to walk with him, leaving Hikari by herself in the classroom. Shinji rings Rei's doorbell, but there is no reply, so he and Toji go up, against Toji's protests. Shinji places the papers on Rei's bed and begins to pick up her trash for her. Toji tells him to leave it alone, but Shinji says "it's just junk." Toji refuses to help, despite Shinji saying that Misato hates those sort of guys. Toji then tells Shinji that he thinks he's changed, just as Rei enters. Toji tells her to excuse them and Rei replies, "What for?" Shinji tells Rei that he picked up her trash, and that he hopes she doesn't mind. This makes Rei blush and say "Thank you." Toji and Shinji leave, and Rei thinks about how she's never use those words before, not even with "him" (referring to Commander Ikari).
Misato is informed by Ritsuko that the Fourth Child has been found, much to her surprise. She asks why she hasn't gotten her report from the Marduk Institute yet. Ritsuko tells her she'll get it soon enough, making Misato suspicious. However, she pushes her suspicions aside for the moment and asks Ritsuko who it is. Ritsuko brings up the data from the computer and Misato is shocked. "You're kidding! Him?! I don't know how I'm going to tell them. It's going to be hard. Asuka will be fine, she's committed to being a pilot...Rei is exceptional, we've never had any problems with her before...but Shinji, on the other hand, has been through some pretty bad phases, even depression. I don't want to expose him to anymore pressure." However Ritsuko tells Misato that finding children like this is imperative, and that she shouldn't complicate things. Misato goes along with it, but goes to Kaji later, who is hitting on Maya. Maya quickly runs away when she sees Misato and Misato tells Kaji, "Far be it for me make judgement on what you do in your private life, but do you think, under the current conditions, it's a good idea to be hitting on girls under certain chains of command?"
Kaji: "Who's under who is not your concern. Would you prefer to be hit on?"
Misato: "That depends on how you answer this question." Misato then asks him about the secrets behind NERV, and why the Fourth Child was found so easily and he tells her that the Marduk Institute doesn't exists, and that NERV is pulling the strings themselves. Kaji then tells her to start looking at code 707, which Misato recognizes as being Shinji's school. Just then Shinji calls her, and she quickly gets away from Kaji. Shinji tells her that she has a meeting with Ritsuko, and Misato says ok and walks off, saying to Kaji, "I'll see you later." Kaji then decides to hang out with Shinji for a while. He shows Shinji the melons he is growing and they have a short chat about pain and pleasure before Kaji is interrupted by a phone call from Misato telling him that Shinji has to go for a synch test. While Shinji is taking the test, Ritsuko informs Misato that his synch ratio is dropping and it may be because of something that happened while he was in Angel #12. Misato replies that this would make it harder to tell him about the Fourth Child, and Ritsuko reminds her that the Fourth Child will be informed officially tomorrow.
The next day at school, Kensuke has returned but Toji is called to the front office. Kensuke asks he has done, and Toji replies that he doesn't know. After Toji is gone, Kensuke starts asking Shinji about the disappearance of NERV-02 and the equipment that was lost, but Shinji tells him that he doesn't know anything, and Kensuke is surprised. When Toji returns to class later, he apologizes to the teacher for being late, but the teacher says, "I know about it." Toji then sits down, looking rather sad. After school, he sits in the class by himself eating his lunch. Hikari enters and tells Toji that he has cleanup duty and he is supposed to align the desks and clean the blackboard. Toji replies that he'll do it as soon as he's eaten his lunch. Hikari then asks if he always buys his lunch and Toji says, "Of course. There's no one at home to cook." Hikari then offers to give him the leftovers of the lunch she cooks for her sisters, and is happy when he accepts. When Hikari goes home, she is happily humming as she prepares dinner, while elsewhere Toji is playing basketball.

Title: The Judgement of Life
Eye-catch Title: Ambivalence
Synopsis: Unit 03 is being delivered to Matsushiro in preparation for the Fourth Child. However, it passes through a storm cloud, and lightning is seen flashing inside. Elsewhere, Shinji is getting ready for school, but Asuka has already left, and he asks Misato where she is. Misato replies that Asuka doesn't feel like facing them right now, and that a teenage girl may be hard to understand. Shinji then goes on to ask Misato about the missing Unit 04, and how she is going to perform the activation tests on Unit 03 at Matsushiro. Misato confirms his thoughts and tells him not to worry. She then tells him Kaji will be coming over to look after them and he asks who is going to pilot Unit 03. Misato starts to answer, but pauses, just as the doorbell rings. Kensuke rushes in, begging Misato to let him pilot Unit 03. Misato is shocked. Later, as Misato and Ritsuko are travelling to Matsushiro, Ritsuko asks whether or not she has told Shinji yet. Misato replies she hasn't and that she's uncertain of how to deal with Shinji. She then says that maybe the Fourth Child would tell Shinji himself, but Ritsuko tells her that he would not, as he was not "very enthused at the prospect." The Fourth Child only agreed to pilot Unit 03 on account that he sister be transferred to their private hospital facility.
At school, Kensuke whines to Toji and Shinji about how unfair it is that Misato won't let him pilot Unit 03. Toji isn't very interested, and Shinji looks over at Toji in wonder. Just then Asuka walks into the room and Shinji asks, "What's up? You left before us, but you're getting here late." And Toji says, "Aw, no fight between the newlyweds today?" Asuka then goes into a frenzy and begins cursing at them and hitting them with her bag, while a startled Hikari watches. When the lunch bell rings, both Kensuke and Shinji are surprised to see that Toji has gone without eating his lunch. Toji is standing outside on the balcony and Rei walks up behind him. He then says to her, "You know don't you? About everything. I think Asuka knows too." Rei nods and Toji tells her that its unusual for her to worry about someone else and how she has a thing for Shinji. Rei is surprised, but then says, "Maybe that is true." Meanwhile, Hikari watches from below. When class resumes, Toji does not return, but instead sits outside thinking about how he punched Shinji last time. When hometime arrives, Asuka walks home with Hikari instead of Shinji. They sit and talk about Toji.
Asuka: "This is about Toji isn't it?"
Hikari: "How did you know?"
Asuka: "Everybody knows. The Three Stooges are the only ones who don't."
Hikari: "Well, Shinji seems sensitive, in a nice sort - "
Asuka: "Shinji is a big fat dork! And he's denser than lead! He wouldn't know how to relate to somebody if you gave him a manual!"
Hikari: "Oh...I see...*pause* I think that Toji may be interested in Rei."
Asuka: "Are you kidding?! Toji and Wonder Girl?!"
Hikari: "Well...at lunch they seemed..."
Asuka: " Don't worry Hikari, it'll never happen. If Shinji is denser than lead, then Rei Ayanami is off the atomic scale!"
Later that night, Asuka and Shinji sit in the living room as Kaji is taking a bath. Shinji asks Asuka who is going to pilot Unit 03, and Asuka is surprised he doesn't know, but she doesn't tell him. Just then Kaji comes out and asks them if they're arguing again. Asuka cries that it's not always like this, but she can't be happy with everything that is going on. Kaji replies that he understands and they all decide to go to bed. As they lie in their sleeping bags, Shinji asks Kaji about his father. Kaji is surprised as he thought that Shinji would ask about Misato. Kaji then tells Shinji that understanding a 100% of anything is impossible, and Shinji replies that he just doesn't understand adults. The next morning, at Matsushiro, Misato and Ritsuko perform the activation tests on Unit 03 but it goes horribly wrong because Unit 03 is possessed by an Angel. The whole place explodes, while back at NERV HQ, a first stage alert has been executed. They see that the Angel is making its way towards them and everyone is shocked to see an Eva. Commander Ikari orders that the Unit 03 be re-classified as Angel #13, and they dispatch their Evas. Shinji is upset to learn that Misato may be hurt in the explosion at Matsushiro and asks who is going to command them. Rei replies that Commander Ikari will and Shinji is surprised. Shinji is horrified to see that their target is an Eva, and says that there must a pilot inside as well. Asuka them pops up on his monitor and says, "You mean you still don't know?! The pilot of - " but she is cut off and her screams are heard. Shinji yells for Asuka but Unit 02 is already down and the entry plug ejected. The Angel then makes it way towards Unit 00, and Rei hesitates to shoot it because she knows who is trapped inside. However, this hesitation is costly, as the Angel flips over and smashes her to the ground. It then tries to merge itself into Unit 00's left arm. Commander Ikari orders that the arm be severed despite the fact that the nerve pulses are still active. The arm is cut off, and Rei screams in pain. The Angel then makes its way to Unit 01, but Shinji can't bring himself to shoot it, because he knows that there is a kid just like him inside. When the Angel attacks, he fears are confirmed when he sees the entry plug. The Angel begins strangling him, but still Shinji refuses to attack. Commander Ikari demands to know why he isn't fighting. Shinji yells that he can't kill another human being and Ikari tells him that it's the Angel or him. Shinji yells that he would rather die. Commander Ikari curses at his son and activates the Dummy Plug. Unit 01 springs to life and begins to brutally smash the Angel/Unit 03, ripping off its arms and legs, and splashing its blood everywhere, much to the horror of Shinji and everyone at NERV. Shinji begs his father to make it stop, but is ignored and screams when his Eva crushes the entry plug.
Elsewhere, Misato is rescued from the explosion and awakens on an ambulance stretcher to find Kaji beside her. She immediately questions where Ritsuko is, and Kaji tells her not to worry as she wasn't hurt as badly as her. Misato is relieved than remembers about Unit 03. Kaji tells her it was destroyed as an Angel by Unit 01, and this makes Misato weep because she never told Shinji who the pilot was. As Shinji sits silently inside his Eva, Misato voice is heard over the intercom. He is relieved that she is alive, but all she does is repeatedly apologize to him. Shinji then shakily tells her that his father forced him to kill, but then he is notified that the pilot's life signs were confirmed. Shinji's face lights up with hope and he peers outside his window to see who it is. Misato still struggles to tell him who it is, but by then Shinji has already seen that the Fourth Child is Toji Suzuhara. Misato calls for him, but all he can hear is his heartbeat. And then he screams. "NOOOOOOOO!!"
