Main Characters

This section has brief profiles about the main and supporting characters in Evangelion. I have tried to keep them as spoiler-free as possible, but if you don't want to know anything before watching the series then I suggest you don't read this until afterwards.

Ikari Shinji (Third Child)
Shinji first comes to Tokyo-3 at the request of his father, Gendou Ikari, the commander of NERV. After some convincing from Misato, the first person from whom he received true kindness, Shinji agrees to pilot the purple test type EVA unit 01. As he fights in each battle, he goes through many traumatic experiences and struggles to maintain his sanity. He has a special interest in Rei and grows closer to all the pilots and Misato throughout the course of the show. His seiyuu is Ogata Megumi.
Ayanami Rei (First Child)
Rei is a mysterious soft-spoken girl with blue hair, who pilots an even bluer EVA unit 00 (the prototype). She used to pilot a yellow Eva, but it was badly damaged in a previous incident and needed to be replaced. Her past is shrouded in darkness and she is often hostile to people. There is some tension and natural rivalry between her and Asuka. Her seiyuu is Hayashibara Megumi.
Sohryu Asuka Langley (Second Child)
Originally from Germany, Asuka is a loud, often aggressive girl who made her first appearance in episode 8. She has a crush on Kaji and doesn't hide it. Piloting the red EVA unit 02, Asuka likes being in control and often takes advantage of Shinji's timidness. However, this assertiveness of Asuka's is only her way of hiding her true self. She is really just a frightened little girl, still haunted with memories of her traumatic childhood. Her seiyuu is Miyamura Yuko.
Katsuragi Misato
The sole survivor of the Second Impact which killed her father, Misato initially joins NERV to take out her revenge on the Angels which were believed to be cause. She soons becomes a Major and has the important task of directing the young pilots during battle. Her past with Kaji causes some complicated problems, and her quick mind makes her suspect that some people in NERV aren't telling her the truth. She has an unhealthy love of alcohol and shares an apartment with her pet penguin PenPen and later Shinji and Asuka. She is easy-going and kind causing her to have a special bond with all the pilots, especially Shinji. Misato's wonderful, talented seiyuu is Mitsuishi Kotono (WAI! ^^).
Akagi Ritsuko
Involved in the secret purpose of the Evangelions, Dr. Akagi does not speak much about her personal life. Her mother, Naoko, created the Magi system on which NERV currently runs before she died in a "freak accident". Althought Ritsuko and Misato have been friends since college, Ritsuko often acts quite arrogantly towards Misato, causing some tension between the two of them at times. Her feelings for the Commander leads her onto a path of self-destruction and the phrase "like mother, like daughter" applies strongly to her. Her seiyuu is Yamaguchi Yuriko.
Ikari Gendou
Commander Ikari is the head of NERV and everyone working in NERV reports to him. Father of Shinji, he has little time for his only son and so his past remains a mystery to even those closest to him. Deeply involved in The Human Instrumentality Project, he hides his real motives for NERV to everyone except an elite few. He is usually always calm and collected, even in times of extreme danger. His seiyuu is Tachiki Fumihiko.
Ryouji Kaji
Witty and a bit of a womanizer, Kaji is often seen patronizing and teasing Misato, for whom he still has strong feelings for. Kaji works closely with the Commander and is one of the few people who is well informed about NERV's and SEELE's dark secrets. Because of his playful nature, you know that when he gets serious (like in the image on the left ^^;) the situation is really not be taken lightly. Misato later becomes quite suspicious about Kaji's purpose in the organization and when she confronts him about it, she discovers some startling revelations. Kaji's seiyuu is Yamadera Kouichi.
