Queensland Arts organisation Arts Nexus and artistic director Shaun Rigney are delighted to announce the inauguration of a new music project to be based in Cairns: the Aquamarine Project.

One element of the project will give rise to three new orchestral works by artistic director, composer Shaun Rigney. The new works include a new solo guitar concerto for guitarist Slava Grigoryan and a duo concerto for Slava and his brother, guitarist Leonard Grigoryan. Previous collaborations featuring Slava and Shaun include the ABC Classics CD Afterimage - Slava Grigoryan Plays the Music of Shaun Rigney, and Impressions, the new ABC Classics album from the Grigoryan brothers. Produced by Shaun Rigney, this album features the music of Debussy, de Falla and Mompou.

One of the great natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef has sheltered and inspired people for thousands of years.

The Aquamarine Project brings together indigenous and non-indigenous musicians in search of 'reef music'. A seemingly infinite submerged wilderness, the Great Barrier Reef fills the imagination. But as we confront changes in the earth's climate, growing revelations of the reef's fragility lend this project particular resonance.

The Aquamarine Project is sponsored by The Christensen Fund, a US-based philanthropic organisation dedicated to raising international awareness around environmental issues and indigenous cultures.
