MURPHY
Our MURPHY interest concerns our ancestor Ann MURPHY, was born in County Meath, Ireland about 1833. Nothing is known of her parentage. Ann arrived in Sydney in 1850 on the John Knox, one of a shipload of female Irish famine orphans She married in Wollongong in 1852 to Joseph (a.k.a. Stephen) ALDINGTON (a.k.a. HOLDINGTON), one of the Hashemy exiles of 1849. Stephen Joseph HOLDINGTON died 30 June 1859 at Tarban Creek Lunatic Assylum (Gladesville). When she married Bernard HAMMELL in Sydney in 1861 she was the widow HOLDINGTON (one source has it as HOLDERTON).Ann seems to have had a very hard life. You can find her story here.
