BRANDs from Henham, Essex

Kerrie HAMMELL's BRAND line comes from the village of Henham, Essex, England.   Henry BRAND was an agricultural labourer, and probably very poor.   His daughter, Susan BRAND, married John TURNER, another agricultural labourer living in Henham.   This couple migrated to Sydney, Australia aboard the Wilson Kennedy, a clipper ship, arriving 27 December 1852.   It was 110 degrees Farenheit at 2pm that day.

John and Susan settled at the Brickfields, Waterloo.   John and his sons became brickmakers, leasing land at Waterloo from the Estate of Daniel COOPER.   John and Susan had thirteen children.   In 1890, John was manager and part-owner of the Carrington Steam Brick Company, in Barwon Park Road, St Peters, when he hit his head on the skip, and died shortly after, on 3 June 1890.   Susan lost three sons in June 1893, drowned in Botany Bay.   Four others were also lost.   Susan died of exhaustion on 28 March 1894.
