Shall I Hire or Buy?
"That is the question"...
f you only plan to use your PA system a few times per year (such as for an annual
presentation night, a sports carnival or a special drama presentation) then HIRING is
far cheaper than BUYING a PA system. Consider the differences in our comparison;
Disadvantage of Buying
- Need secure storage space for equipment
- Need to check and maintain equipment
- Large initial capital outlay
- Gear quickly becomes outdated and damaged
- Need to setup, packup and operate yourself
- Need skilled operators
Advantage of Hiring
- Only have equipment when actually in use
- Gear always tested and in working condition
- Low annual hire fees
- Always get the latest gear in top condition
- Ready to use - no setting up
- Skilled operators supplied with hire
If you plan to use your PA system less than 5 times per year, then HIRING is the way to go. This simple
comparison is made assuming you want to buy a PA system and use it for, say, two special events per year,
for example an annual presentation night and a couple of annual drama presentations. If hiring, this might add upto around 2 x first day hires and 2 x Additional day hires for our simple BOSE 802 system.
To hire the system per year will cost you;
2 x First day Hires @ $240 ea = $480
2 x Add'l day hires @ $120 ea = $240
Total Cost Per Year = $720
Total Cost over 10 years = $7200
To buy a system of similar capacity, with an expected service life of 10 years will cost you;
Initial Cost of System = $7500
New Microphones & Leads in 5th year = $600
Maintenance Costs / Service Calls = $500
Depreciation = $2000
Total Cost over 10 years = $10,600
