Absolute and Apparent Magnitude

The apparent magnitude of a star, m, is defined as:

m = -2.5 * log_10(l) + K

where K is a constant defined by convention.

Absolute magnitude, M, is defined as the apparent magnitude of the star at 10 parsecs.

The sun has an apparent magnitude of -26.8 and an absolute magnitude of 4.83.
