Desktop Background Pictures: instructions for your operating system

Follow these directions to use a picture for your computer's desktop background.

Instructions - Windows XP

  1. Select the link of the picture you want to download.
  2. On the File menu, select Save As... (or Save Page As). (Alternately, right-click on the picture, select Set as Wallpaper or Set as Background, then ignore the remaining steps.)
  3. Choose a folder on your computer to put the picture into.
  4. On the Start menu, select Control Panel (or on the Start menu, select Settings then select Control Panel).
  5. Select Appearance and Themes, then select the Display icon.
  6. On the Desktop tab, select Browse....
  7. Locate the picture in its folder.
  8. Select Open.
  9. Select Apply.

Instructions - Windows 98, Me, or 2000

  1. Select on the link of the picture you want to download.
  2. On the File menu, select Save As... (or Save Page As). (Alternately, right-click on the picture, select Set as Wallpaper or Set as Background, then ignore the remaining steps.)
  3. Choose a folder on your computer to put the picture into.
  4. On the Start menu, select Settings then select Control Panel.
  5. Double-click the Display icon.
  6. On the Background tab, select Browse....
  7. Locate the picture in its folder.
  8. Select Open.
  9. Select Apply.

Instructions - Windows 95 or NT4

  1. Select the link of the picture you want to download.
  2. On the File menu, select Save As... (or Save Page As). (Alternately, right-click on the picture, select Set as Wallpaper, then ignore the remaining steps.)
  3. Choose a folder on your computer to put the picture into.
  4. Use an image editing program to convert the picture into a bitmap file (bitmaps end with the .bmp extension).
  5. On the Start menu, select Settings then select Control Panel.
  6. Double-click the Display icon.
  7. On the Background tab, select Browse....
  8. Locate the picture in its folder.
  9. Select Open.
  10. Select Apply.

Instructions - Linux

  1. Select the link of the picture you want to download.
  2. On the File menu, select Save As... (or Save Page As). (Alternately, right-click on the picture, select Set as Wallpaper, then ignore the remaining steps.)
  3. Choose a folder on your computer to put the picture into.
  4. Open the Linux Control Center.
  5. Select Desktop, then Background, and select Browse....
  6. Locate the picture in its folder.
  7. Select OK.
  8. Select Try.
