Big Brarn, how's that nur machine going man?

Anyone like romancing the old PC games of yore? I do, discovered I had the original Duke Nukem 3D on my machine last night, what a cack! "Come get soooooome!" I switched it up to mega hard and went a'blazin', you gotta love it. The aliens have absolutely no clue and just meander toward you like they were made of bricks and you just pour as many bullets as you can muster from the pump action straight into them. You don't even have to aim really, the bullets just find there way so long as you're facing the general vicinity. Aaaahhhhh, I had so much fun. Actually got through the first level without dying, tell you though, I missed a secret somewhere, doh!

And after the shock of last night I'd forgotten all about giving it a rating. Don't suppose a big fat zero would come as a surprise? A couple of other flicks we took in over the weekend, these were actually ok...

Spiderman - stars Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst

Cooooooool. I know I know, I'm the last person on the planet to see this (seem to be saying that alot lately, hhmm), but it was worth it. Stace even sat through it again for me, so I was figuring from the start it couldn't be too bad.

I'm a big fan of the Batman films, and I was figuring something similar was going to be done here, take a childhood character and make him dark and angry and...er...adult. That's a bit of a worry yeah? Anyhoo, I really enjoyed this. I'm happy to put aside all the computer generated inclusions as this is strictly fantasy, Spidey's the man. I saw the original screen adaptation back in '81 with Stu, we tried to climb anything and everything for the next month, and although I wasn't planning on doing the same this time around, it did bring back some fond memories. Ah fantasy, we love it.

For me it was Willem who made it, his forte is playing eccentric characters, I don't think they could've cast it better. Tobey pretty much went through the motions, Kirsten wasn't stretching either - although some of her tops were, when did they arrive...anyone?

I won't go into the storyline, you guys will all know it, but I do have to say that the ending just screamed sequal. My guess being young Harry Osborn is gonna discover his father's research and turn himself into a psycho and hunt down Spidey for killing off Dad, yeah baby, bring it on! And how spot on was I, not about the storyline per say, but all the usual suspects have signed on for "The Amazing Spiderman" slated for a 2004 opening - Tobey, Kirsten and James are all to appear. Tops. 4 stars.

The Time Machine - stars Guy Pearce

How bizarre. Despite the whole time travel concept being done and done and done, this happens to be one that makes you scratch your head and think, 'okay, that's different'. Ok so its the 1800's or thereabouts and our hero loses his girlfriend in a tragic accident. He devotes the next 3 years of his life to building a time machine, so's he can go back in time and prevent said tragic event from taking place. However this is to no avail, she gets it no matter what, and he can't figure out why.

In frustration he heads into the future, where perhaps he will find the answer. And this is where the 'wow' factor comes in. For anyone whose read H.B.Wells' book on which this is based, you'll know what's coming. Insert interesting fact here - this is directed by Simon Wells, HB's great-grandson. Now lets not forget to mention how far into the future he goes. Initially its only just down the track, for us anyway, he hits 2080 or thereabouts from memory. And then briefly to 7 years later when...oh I really shouldn't say. But the kicker is after he leaves that time, he heads 800,000 years into the future. 800,000 years folks. Have you ever sat there and thought to yourself "hhmm, wonder what this planet is going to look like in 800,000 years time...?" Yeah nuh! So, is this plausible? Can you go there?

But someone's had a crack at it here, and you think "wow, this dude actually had a go". I found it a little contrived, I won't go into why. I can't say too much because for those of you who haven't seen it and want to, it would spoil it. Just bare in mind that this idea was primarily conceived some 150 years ago, so let it pan out in front of you before sitting in judgement.

I didn't think it was super, but it certainly didn't suck, and the cast doesn't get in the way of the story at all which is great. To be honest you could've put anyone in there and you'd still ignore the actors to get your head around what you're seeing. I'm giving it 3 stars, I wanted to give it more, but...

Saw the preview for "Halloween: Resurrection" again last night, TOPS! Nothing like a bit of murder Mike Myers style to keep the spirit alive. And there's also another Friday 13th coming along some time soon-ish, I saw the preview some months ago but didn't think to mention it until now. Can't say I'm interested in that one, Jason Vorhees can kma!

Cheers all
