PART 6:
OVERVIEW

AGENCIES INVOLVED IN USAR

A USAR Task Force also functions using the multi-agency approach. Fire & Rescue is the agency which holds the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) classification but many State and Commonwealth services combine during the operations.

Cat 2 trained members make up the bulk of the Task Force. Cat 3 incident managers fill the role of Task Force Leader and Deputy Task Force Leader. Task Force Specialists fill the remainder of the roles. Personnel such as incident management team, engineers, doctors, search dog handlers, security liaison and Commonwealth Government liaison complete their Task Force Specialist certification as well as complete Category 1 USAR training prior to deployment.

At international events, many global agencies will interact. Search and rescue efforts will be coordinated through global arrangements. Agencies who participate at this level of coordination include:

* Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade:
responsible for Australian deployable teams and provide mission coordination team.
* Attorney-General's Department:
provide embedded liaison officers within the deployable teams.
* Australian Defence Force:
Provide transport and logistic support
* International Search & Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG):
Ensure that search & rescue teams are capable of performing tasks.
* Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs:
perform post-disaster coordination and assessment.
