Victim marking is used to identify potential or known casualty (live or deceased) locations that are not obvious to rescuers (such as below debris).
Victim marking should be used at incidents involving multiple casualties or where any confusion on exact location from search operations is possible. It is also used when teams are not remaining on site to immediately commence operations.
Markings are done as close as physically possible to the actual surface point identified as the location of the casualty.
The material used to create the marking can be spray paint, builders crayon, stickers, waterproof card etc. as determined by the team.
Victim markings are not intended for use when rescue operations are completed.
Victim markings are not to be applied to the front of a structure with the Worksite ID unless that is where the casualties are located.
Initial marking
 | A "V" is applied to the location of all potential victims, live or deceased.
This mark should be large and visible (around 50cm high).
The colour of the marking should be highly visible in a colour contrasting to the background. |
 | Optional arrow from "V" to clarify location.
Use only if required |
Then add either:
| If the casualty is alive: | If the casualty is deceased: | If there is a combination of live and deceased victims |
 | | |
Insert an "L" under the "V" to indicate a confirmed live victim.
Then insert a number indicating the count of live victims at that location. | Insert a "D" under the "V" to indicate a confirmed deceased victim.
Then insert a number indicating the number of deceased victims at that location. | Insert both "L" and "D" under the "V" to indicate that there are both live and deceased victims.
Then insert numbers to indicate the number of each. |
When victims are rescued or recovered:
 | On removal of any casualty the relevant marking is crossed out and updated.
For example "L-2" may be crossed out and a "L-1" applied indicating only one live victim rescued and one live victim remaining. |
 | If all live victims are removed and only deceased remain, cross out all "L" references.
When only "D" values remain, it means that there are no more live rescues to be performed at the site, only recovery of deceased victims |
 | When all "L" and/or "D" markings are crossed out and all known victims have been removed. |
