Now that all surface casualties are removed, your team should commence a systematic search to locate any victims that were not obvious during initial rescue efforts.
There will be a video clip here to show a line and hail search.
A collapse search area should be identified and a team leader appointed to manage the search.
Ensure that the safety of the crew is first priority. Check for hazards and provide lighting if it is dark.
If possible, an "All quiet" should be made to reduce background noise and increase the chances of hearing a response.
All rescuers move to an edge of the search area and position themselves up to 2-3 metres apart in a straight line.
The Team Leader remains behind and assigns numbers for the team members. The team member on the left side is the "No 1 Rescuer", this is continued towards the right side.
The line and hail search is conducted:
* The line moves forward 2-3 metres * ALL rescuers crouch or place their heads low * No. 1 Rescuer calls "RESCUE TEAM ABOVE. CAN YOU HEAR ME?" * The entire team listens for a response. * After 10-15 seconds if no response occurs, No. 1 Rescuer calls out "NOTHING HEARD" * This is the cue for No. 2 Rescuer to repeat the action of No. 1 rescuer. * This process continues until all rescuers have called out.
After moving forward another 2-3 metres, the process is repeated until the search area has been covered. Practical activity 2:
Your instructor will take you through a practice line and hail search. | |
