PART 2:
PREPARING FOR A USAR OPERATION

SPECIAL RESOURCES

A major incident will have the potential to quickly overwhelm and deplete the resources of any one single agency.

When this happens, additional resources and equipment will be required.

This was highlighted at the Thredbo Landslide in 1997:

At 11:37 pm, New South Wales Fire Brigades Communication Centre at Wollongong received emergency calls from locals at Thredbo. Initial reports were that a landslide had occurred.

On arrival local emergency services found two ski lodges that had been displaced after a landslide. Police evacuated the area.

Rescue personnel were sent from Sydney along with specialist equipment.

Medical Staff were sent from Cooma and Canberra and four specialists were flown from St George Hospital.

Within 3 hours there were 100 professionals on the scene, as well as volunteers.

In the days that followed resources arrived at the scene from NSW emergency services, interstate services and private companies.

The type of equipment required can be broken down into the areas listed below. While this list is not complete or exhaustive, it provides an indication of the types of equipment that will be required at an incident.
