PART 2:
PREPARING FOR A USAR OPERATION

STRUCTURAL INSTABILITY

When a building collapses, it will eventually stop and reach a point of equilibrium. At this point no further movement will occur unless generated by an external bearing pressure i.e. people working on the pile, an earth tremor, wind etc.

When working on a collapse site:

  1. Consult a structural engineer wherever possible
  2. Be aware of the location of elevators, especially when working adjacent to an elevator shaft
  3. Load bearing components should only be cut as a last resort  (a door, for example, could be all that is holding up a collapsing ceiling)
  4. Be vigilant for signs of secondary collapse.
