The origin of the surname Emonson.
The British Chancery Records (1386 - 1588) record Thomas and Margaret Emonson living in Lincoln in 1544. We also know that Margret Emonson died in Yorkshire in 1539.
It is most interesting to note that in the mid 1800s some members of the Emonson family in the USA lived in the town of Norway in Dickinson County in the state of Michigan. This was about the same time that John and Maria Emonson arrived in Australia from Middlesex, England.
In relation to our surname, one theory is that Emonson is derived from ‘Son of Emon’.
So what can we make from all that?
- some believe we definitely have Scandinavian (possibly Norwegian) origins.
- it seems most likely that all Emonsons living in Australia, Great Britain and the USA are related.
I look forward to any assistance that helps progress our understanding of our ancestry. In particular, I look forward to one of our U.S.A. family who has, or knows of someone who has, completed research, making contact with me.
