Pharmaceutical Sales - In recent years much has been written about the profits earned by pharmaceutical companies around the world. Pharmaceutical sales indeed have resulted in tremendous profits for decades.
Over the course of the past several years, on average pharmaceutical sales have increased overall an average of nearly twenty percent per annum. Profits have taken a similar increase. Indeed, for the most part, the increase in profits experienced by pharmaceutical companies worldwide have essentially mirrored the increase seen in pharmaceutical sales.
Of course, there is some variation in the ratio of pharmaceutical sales to profits experienced by drug companies. For example, profits enjoyed by companies in the United States are noticeably higher than those experienced by companies operating in Canada. Indeed, in recent years many U.S. citizens have attempted to procure their medications from Canadian outlets.
In most instances, pharmaceutical sales are not tied into the overall economy of any given nation. Of course some people might consider this a trite recognition, but the sales of certain types of drugs actually increase during periods of economic recession or depression. For example, sales of medications designed to deal with ailments like depression increase during periods of economic recession or decline.
When challenges are made to the profit margins enjoyed by drug companies, pharmaceutical companies do tender arguments to justify the high profits earned on pharmaceutical sales internationally. The crux of the arguments put forth by drug companies is that these companies have to spend a great deal on product research and development before a product ever reaches the market. They are unable to make any money whatsoever from pharmaceutical sales until they spend millions and millions of dollars on research and development.
Drug companies also argue that they need to enjoy a high rate of return on their R & D investments via pharmaceutical sales in order to maintain a cash chest that can be available should they face the prospect of having to settle lawsuits because of unexpected problems associated with a product.
In any case, pharmaceutical sales are expected to continue to soar in the coming decade. And, as a consequence, drug companies are expected to enjoy large profits for the foreseeable future.
