Pharmaceutical Bush Contribution - The 2004 presidential election in the United States marked historic levels of contributions from pharmaceutical companies into the race. The pharmaceutical Bush contribution during the 2004 campaign outpaced the money the industry donated to George Bush’s opponent, John Kerry.
The pharmaceutical Bush contribution was so much higher than that given to Senator Kerry for two primary reasons. These reasons for the higher rate of the pharmaceutical Bush contribution will be discussed briefly in this short article.
First of all, the pharmaceutical Bush contribution - the donations to his campaign from U.S. based pharmaceutical outfits - has been higher than that to John Kerry because of a concern or fear on the part of these companies that John Kerry will open the Canadian border and allow residents of the United States greater access to prescription meds from Canada. While there was nothing firm and definitive in John Kerry’s campaign statements in this regard, he has indicated a willingness to consider allowing citizens of the United States far greater access to Canadian medications (which are generally significantly cheaper in cost than those available in the U.S.) than has ever been experienced by residents of the U.S.
U.S. drug companies oppose such a proposal and have increased their pharmaceutical Bush contribution to attempt to stave off a Kerry presidency.
The second reason the pharmaceutical Bush contribution has been so significant during the 2004 campaign is based on the fact that John Kerry is proposing a significant overhaul of the American medical system. This proposed overhaul will directly impact the huge profits enjoyed by pharmaceutical companies in the United States for years. As a consequence, in an attempt to protect their bottom lines, these companies have donated to the Bush presidential campaign in record fashion.
The pharmaceutical Bush contribution has far exceeded what has been donated to other presidential candidates in the past. And, the primary motivations behind these extensive donations are the two reasons set forth in this brief article.
