Shire Pharma - Shire Pharma is a pharmaceutical company headquartered in the United Kingdom with its head office in London. Shire Pharma has been in business for a significant period of time, the UK being its primary market. Despite the UK being the primary market for Shire Pharma the company does operate in a notable number of other countries.
The drug that has opened a great deal of doors for Shire Pharma has been Epivir. Epivir is the best selling drug in the Shire Pharma cabinet.
Industry analysts noted in the fall of 2004 that Shire Pharma can anticipate stiff competition from other companies for the market share currently held by Epivir.
The analysts mention that a majority of the patients currently prescribed to Epivir in combination with Viread are expected to switch over to the recently approved competing drug in this segment, Truvada. The recent industry prescription data indicates that this switch has already begun.
The analysts expect the ongoing switch from the combination of Epivir and Viread to Truvada to lead to a 40% decline in Shire Pharma’s Epivir revenues next year. Analysts anticipate relatively limited potential competition for the company’s Combivir drug, particularly in Europe. The analysts consider the potential approval for Fosrenol in the US early next month a major catalyst for the company’s share price in the near term.
The news referenced in this article has caused a notable drop in value of Shire Pharma stock. The decline in value is expected to continue through the early months of 2005. At the time of the writing of this article, share in Shire Pharma were trading at just over five British Pounds Sterling.
Shire Pharma likely will attempt to reposition itself during the next eighteen months in order to make up for the significant revenue loss that the company will experience as a result of the matter of Epivir. The company pins some of its hopes for a healthier financial future on research and development project currently underway. However, analysts doubt that the company will offer a drug like Epivir in the near future that will so significantly impact the revenue stream of Shire Pharma in a positive manner.
