The economic structure of the industry is essentially oligopolistic, despite the fact that innovative companies enjoy monopoly profits during the patented sales period. Essentially, oligopoly is where there are a small number of large firms dominating the industry, who are interdependent but do not collude. Any one of these larger firms can affect market shares and profitability of its competitors by its own decisions and actions, therefore the need to consider possible reactions of competitors in making decisions about prices and other marketing tactics is a distinguishing feature of an oligopolistic industry.
