Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body. These include the muscles, the skin, tendons, ligaments and other forms of connective tissue. It is something we all do naturally. The simple act of stroking the skin to relieve a localised pain or discomfort is a natural and basic form of massage. Massage therapy is a safe and effective procedure to assist in stress management. In conjunction with any medical treatment already in place, massage therapy is an effective way to assist the body to regain balance in many areas and to assist in the management of musculo-skeletal problems. Massage is generally done using the light application of an oil on the skin to allow for a steady and continuous flow of movement.

WHY DO PEOPLE GO TO A MASSAGE THERAPIST? HOW MIGHT YOU BENEFIT FROM THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE?

Reason #1: Massage is a natural, healthier alternative to stress release, relaxation and associated pain than pharmaceutical drugs. Massage can assist in relief of some forms of headache.

Reason #2: Massage has a calming affect which can assist in improving sleep patterns

Reason #3: As an effective means of improving circulation, replacing fatigue with renewed energy, and relieving stress and tension.

stimulates the blood flow and the lymphatic system, improves circulation locally (this can assist in removal of waste products and healing processes in localised areas)

Reason #4: Relieving pain from weekend athletics and other sporting activities. Regular massage can even improve sports performance, thanks to improved flexibility, range of motion and pain-free movement.

Reason #5: Massage can also assist with post-operative rehabilitation.

Increased circulation is one of the main benefits of massage - with certain massage techniques, delivery of vital oxygen and nutrients to your body's tissues in enhanced. Massage speeds up your body's removal of wastes and toxins and replaces fatigue with energy. Release of muscular tension is another wonderful benefit of massage therapy. During your massage, there is a release of 'endorphins' - your body's own, internal, natural pain-killers. This relaxes muscles, calms nerves, releases pent-up stress. Business people frequently report clearer thinking and more energy as a result of massage therapy.

Structural Alignment

The Stresses that day to day living

places on our bodies has an effect on

our posture. When we repeat bad

 postural habits permanent changes begin

to occur in our muscles and connective

 tissue. Some muscles shorten (adaptive

 shortening) and some muscles lengthen

(stress weakness). This leads to induced

pain and discomfort. By correcting and

 resetting muscle and connective tissue

 length, posture is improved and

 associated discomfort is eliminated. The

process takes approximately 21 days to

be permanent and usually requires 7

treatments. The bad habits that caused

the problem must also be addressed so

the help of an exercise physiologist is

 recommended.
