Miss Laura Hoare Retires - 1967

After a lifetime of service to children, the matron of Beechholme Children's Community in Firtree-road Banstead retires next week.

She is Miss, Laura M. Hoare. She has. been Matron at Beechholme since 1949. Before that she was assistant matron and earlier held several junior positions during her younger days.

A native of Southsea, Miss Hoare probably had her first insight into child care when helping her parents to bring up a large family of which she was the eldest.

She has in the past been a member of Sutton Soroptimist Club and has been chair-man of the Surrey branch of the Residential Child Care Association in recent years.

Mr. G. A. Banner, superintendent of Beechholme told the Herald this week: "To say we shall miss Matron Hoare would be the under statement of the year" .

"Her career spans almost the period from the guardians to the family service. We have always valued her for her out-standing loyalty and utter reliability. She has always been a champion of the children, and woe betide anyone who failed to give even the most difficult one his fair share".

Miss Hoare's successor is Miss Joan Greenleaf, at present a lecturer in Child Studies at Brixton College of Further Education.
