Lane Cove West 6, St Michaels 0

10 May  2008, Blackman

It was another picture perfect day at Blackman Oval on Saturday. We were up against St. Michaels, whose results in their first 3 games were very competitive, so we expected a good game.

We started slower than the previous weeks, finding it hard to string passes together and keep possession. In true Blackman style the grounds slow but sure deterioration and the opposition’s earlier enthusiasm didn’t help. As time went on and we had a chance to make a few changes to the team that started the game and soon we gained the upper hand.

As time went on we realised that their keeper was less than confident with the ball anywhere near him, but this only seemed to make our player try impossible shots from miles out.

On the 20 minute mark we grabbed our first goal. Alex Dimos, beat one, beat 2, cut inside a third, tapped around a 4th and smashed it from at least 6 yards………….He ran out of puff or he may have just walked it in.

Soon after Dimos rose at the back post to make it 2 and we were well on our way. Dimos found himself in unchartered waters, after having spent the last 25 years playing as a stopper or defensive midfielder……he was now in the nose bleed part of the field and may not have been sure of what he had to do, hence trying to walk it in rather than shooting 14 touches sooner………….or was it he needed something to talk up at the pub??

Now we started hitting our straps and it seemed that their defence was trying to hold back a Tsunami with a picket fence. Just before halftime Papas made it 3, after a great through ball by Felix to leave him one on one with the keeper.

The second half saw a very scrappy affair with LCW making more changes than a Milan fashion show. In our case we have no models in our team, simply old men with good incomes, pretending to play football. When will we learn that expensive boots don’t make you a good player.

The first 25 minutes of the second half saw Xenos make a great run into the box and finish nicely to make it 4. Papas get away from his maker to turn a header in off a corner for the fifth and Skribensek over hit a cross which found its way just inside the back post.

The last 20 minutes of the match was as frustrating as a drunken man tied to a light post trying to pull up his pants from around his ankles. The score remained 6-0.

We hope that the pain goes away in time for next week.
