The boys returned
to Mowbray to take on the chaps from the far north
and defend their unbeaten start to the season.
Not all was rosy
in the home camp before this one kicked off with Pat (allegedly through kicking
a fence….) and Matt out injured and Dave and Paul plagued with colds.
The back four
took a little time to settle, (with the early shouts of ‘Nick take 14’ quickly
being abandoned after this left both Nick’s rushing to take on the whinging Berowra forward), but
didn’t look in real danger early on.
That is until Berowra scored.
A break from the
away side led to a an overlap at the back stick, a shot came in that Kye initially spilled, but then looked to have regained
control before the two onrushing Berowra forwards
kicked the ball loose and into the net.
The goal stood, much to the dismay of the home side. The crowd on the sidelines
were hushed.
Berowra spent the rest of the half stringing 5
across midfield and playing on the break.
Lane Cove West pushed on and created several good chances and shots from
the edge of the area that went agonizingly close. A goal-mouth scramble from a corner nearly
led to a deserved equaliser, but it was not to be and
Berowra held onto their lead at the break.
The home side
came out intent on turning the game round in the second half, but it was the
northern chaps who came closest in the first ten minutes. Then Lane Cove West settled down and began to
drive Berowra back.
Chris was terrorising the right side of the Berowra
back line, picking up the ball in his own half and tearing through the maroon defence in a great impersonation of Forrest Gump – ‘run
Chris run!’. One particular sizzling run
had two Berowra defenders on their back-sides and
they were lucky not to give away a penalty.
Time continued to
fly past as Lane Cove West created chances without taking them and a switch to
3-5-2 was made to try and get the equaliser.
Then it came,
after a good spell of pressure a great cross in from the right was met by
Charlie with a deft glancing header that gave the keeper no chance. Get in!
The momentum was
with the home side, but as they pushed forward Berowra
were creating chances on the break and should have done better with a couple of
breaks. The home side switched back to
4-4-2.
The final whistle
went on a thriller that saw Lane Cove West maintain their unbeaten start, but
disappointed not to have taken all three points in a game they really should
have won.
