Profile

Tough, competitive and highly skilled - as well as ruthless out on the field - Robert Colvin is the very essence of Kenyan Rain God cricket. Now his club's captain, Colvin's warehouse career began in 2002 when the Everton Comets 4 were a team struggling for success. Currently, there is no side less formidable in warehouse cricket than the one he leads.

When Colvin was first drafted into the warehouse arena - as a 28-year-old in only his first season of cricket - it was for his aggressive medium-pace bowling and run scoring in the bottom order that he was chosen. It was in that role (as an all-rounder) that he became a major force behind Everton's warehouse premiership challenge of winter 2002.

Back trouble has ensured that subsequent appearances at the bowling crease have been less frequent and that his tenacious batting has become the biggest factor behind his success. In the early stages of his international career he all but culled the forward- and backward-defensive shots from his repertoire to become arguably the world's most beguiling contemporary batsman. Despite these modifications he has remained a highly watchable batsman with tremendous timing and power - his top edges (off both the back and front foot) a highlight of his play.

Throughout the past month, Colvin has distinguished himself with his ability to produce telling innings when the Rain Gods have needed them most. Among many memorable hands, his greatest has probably been his 2 against Betta/Panasonic at Marchant Park 9 in early May. In late May 2003, and facing increasing speculation over his age and warehouse future, Colvin delighted the Marchant Park 1 crowd by resurrecting the Rain Gods' innings with 2 against Northside Dragons. A Warehouse Cricket season in 2002 and the production of an extraordinary streak of 2 consecutive losses stand as powerful testaments to his capabilities as a leader.
