Shane Meng. More than
just an important member of the KRG batting lineup, for
many matches Shane Meng WAS the KRG batting lineup.
Debuting with a cool 61 against the Dragons, it seemed
the only thing that could possibly deny Meng the honour
of racking up the first century by a KRG batsman was the
inability of the rest of the team to collectively hold
up the other end.
Then Tonkes retired.
Averaging a paltry 4.17
with the bat, Tonkes was probably not threatening the
3-figures club in his own right. However, the burly allrounder's departure did open the door for someone who
might - a promising youngster by the name of Craig "Jr"
Meng. In his first season with the Gods, Craig was
firmly in the shadow of his elder brother, struggling to
eke out the odd 20 while the established KRG superstar
was leading the team to thrilling wins with
swashbuckling half centuries. Undeterred, Jr promoted
himself to senior opener for the 2005 season with
immediate results - a match-winning 53* against the
fiery Kuskopf and a broken nose against Sisson the
obvious highlights. Together with an inexplicable form
slump from Meng the elder (who had suddenly developed a
penchant for getting hit on the pads in front of
middle), Jr found himself atop the KRG batting averages
for the first time in his career.
At Marchant Park 2 on the
10th of July 2005 at approximately 12:45pm, and with his
brother at the other end, Craig Meng worked a 2 to take
himself to 101*. He would finish on 112*. Shane's dream
of scoring the first-ever KRG century had been
shattered.
