World Masters Games- Ballarat
October 2002

There were very mixed reports from the World Masters Games
in Ballarat. Thousands of competitors and great competition with
some pleasing results and a few medals, but the wind and
the cold were a dampener. Still it was a fun week with
great camaraderie among all the competitors.

Womens D 8 over the line

About 30 North Shore Masters Members competed in
Ballarat. While the standard of competition from around
Australia and around the world was very high, we
managed to bring some medals back.

It's a good thing
John James was driving, otherwise he would have been
paying excess baggage charges on the plane! He captured
3 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals. Well done, John.
Other medals went to our Mixed C & D quads, Mixed D &
F eights and our Mixed D double scull. The Women's D
8+, Men's E quad and E pair all made the finals.

The following information is from from Kim Rudder.
It comes as no surprise to find that Kim is a mathematics teacher.
He found lots of mathematical material on the bank
of Lake Wendouree

"Starting at 6.00am on the Saturday, (and it took about
three-quarters of an hour to do) I counted 66 Eights, 225 Fours (this
included coxed and coxless fours and quads), 226 pairs and Doubles and 227
single sculls, making a total of 744 boats of all descriptions.

I was told
whilst doing the count that at least three trailer loads of boats had
already left the site and there were already a few Doubles on the lake at
that early hour, so a ball park figure would be a total of about 750 boats.
There were 61 trailers of various types. I did not get into the mine field
of thinking about oars.

Using the impression formed during the count
regarding the overall quality of of the various boats, the proportion of
coxed and coxless fours etc, I came up with a figure of about $10 000 000
worth of boats alone sitting on the bank of Lake Wendouree.

All in all, it
was pretty impressive."
