President's Pen

I will take the opportunity of this newsletter to bring those members who missed the AGM up to date with the Club's Annual Review.

Firstly, congratulations to our Award winners. For the 2nd year in a row, Sarah Moxon won the McPherson shield for sculling and Ken Novich won the Bowden shield for sweep oar rowers. The President's award went to our Captain, John James.

Financially, we had a very good year with a trading balance of $14,000, approximately 14% of our turnover. Considering that we had a negative trading balance last year, this was a very pleasing result.

We had hoped to leave our subscriptions at last year's rates as we realise that we are the most expensive club in Sydney, but our turnover is now at $100,000 and we must register for GST thus losing 10% of our subs to the Government.

Our cash balance is $75,000 and we hoped that when it reached $100,000 we could start the process of redeveloping the clubhouse. Unfortunately, this will not be possible as most of the reserves will now have to go towards the pontoon and staging plus the usual yearly need to replenish our boats of approximately $30,000. The fixed part of the staging has already been done. With 1" thick iron wood planks, it should not have to be redone for another 50 years!

The angled part of the staging and the pontoon are now being tackled. Unfortunately they will be very expensive, perhaps $50,000, which will eat up our reserves. Any fund raising ideas, see note on reverse.

President

Captain’s Corner

Winter has definitely arrived and with it, the opportunity to improve your aerobics and technical skills with winter training. The river has been magical these last few weeks with no wind and cool, crisp mornings. A good approach to winter training is to split an outing into three phases: a) warm up on the piece up to the bridge, b) do a range of exercises to practice technique and balance on the rest of the way up river, and c) do a continuous piece for 20 to 30 minutes of controlled rowing on the way back to the club. Scullers wanting to go as a group should know that a bunch usually leaves the clubhouse between 7.15 and 7.30 am each Saturday morning.

Waterways Authority has come out with its new requirements for lighting for early morning darkness. Boats are supposed to have a flashing white light mounted approximately one meter high which is visible all around. Many of the club training boats are being fitted with special mountings for these lights. The approved torch is available from the NSWRA at $49. Do not forget to mark/label your torch so that it does not get lost/mislaid/stolen/borrowed.

Many thanks go to Paul Tout who organised and spent a lot of time in the recent replanking of the upper staging. There is some firewood left for those who wish to chop and cart it away.

A few members of the Club are still in training for the FISA World Masters Regatta in Montreal at the end of August. Good luck to all. Those planning to enter the 8th Australian Masters Games to be held in the Hunter Region, October 5 - 14 need to complete their entries and lodge them by August 7. The Club's Corporate Regatta, to raise funds for new equipment, is scheduled for 23 September. Crews of mainly novices will be in training for this event from mid August for about 6 weeks. If you know of individuals or crews wanting to join please let us know and enrol them.

Social & Fundraising

The Committee Members have had a busy and enjoyable year. We have organised two dinners, one seafood and one Italian, which were well attended and resulted in a healthy profit. As well, a new range of Club apparel has been on sale. Club Members now look very smart at regattas off the water as well on it, while contributing to Club funds.

The twilight Christmas Regatta was run as a social fun occasion with the main purpose of allowing some of the newer members the opportunity to meet and row with some of the more long term Members. It was a very successful afternoon and hopefully one which can become an annual event. A wine tasting and launch of our own North Shore Wine Label was held in conjunction with the Italian Dinner. These wines were supplied by Geoff Merrell's vineyard and represent good value. Orders can still be placed through Andrew Boyce. Hopefully, this also can become an annual fund raising event so keep space in your cellar. Also throughout the year, Members of the Committee have provided catering support for various club activities.

Several activities are in the planning stage for the remainder of this year. Our Garage Sale date should be finalised shortly and don't forget the end of season BBQ on Sunday, 5 August at 12.30 pm.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Members of the Social and Fund Raising Committee for their hard work and also the other Club Members who have assisted the Committee in various activities. We obviously need to increase our fund raising to assist in the running of the club and, more importantly, to allow purchase of new boats and equipment. All suggestions, assistance and offers for raffles prizes are very welcome as all Members of the Club need to be involved if we are to be successful.

P.S. Well done, Sue for all your hard work. Editor.

Roseville Report

With winter well up on us, the girls have swapped their oars and shells for the hum of the ergometer and the clang of weights. The girls have continued their work and are training for the coming season with renewed vigour. Perhaps this is because the regatta program for the girls is the largest in recent memory.

The first regatta on our program will be the Roseville College Regatta to be held at Penrith on November 10. This, our first regatta, will see another milestone in the short history of Roseville Rowing and will be a good indicator of the coming season. It is hoped that this will become an annual event with its profile improving over coming seasons and the program expanding into club or school boy events.

As the days begin to lengthen again you will start to see Roseville down at the sheds training with novices and seniors alike and we look forward to another season of great racing and training.

Disrow

Disrow has proved to be short of rowers in the past few months. Just as we told our adaptive oarsmen & women that they had an opportunity to help get rowing in the Paralympics, they seemed to disappear. FISA, the sport's international governing body, asked for 10 countries to send adaptive teams to the coming World Championships and NSW tried raise two crews. Nepean undertook to raise one and North Shore the other.

Unfortunately, James Maskell had to undergo an operation and without James, his usual partner, Paul Walcoott, lost his enthusiasm. Sean Taylor, our bright new member who joined us recently, was left on his own because our Disrow stalwart, Tim Stephen, became involved in other activities and was not available for rowing.

NSW and Australia was saved from embarrassment because FISA was unable to obtain the minimum 10 countries for this year's World Rowing Championships and has deferred its program until 2002.

So, to James and Paul, Sean and Tim, we say, let's put these impediments behind us and set about raising a crew for next year, to help FISA mount its campaign to have rowing included in the 2004 Paralympics.
